Hey folks,

I've been there twice now this winter. 1st time was off Big Island and the 2nd was off Deseronto toward the island from the marina. Both times I was skunked! I see a lot of people fishing but not many catching any... I also see from pictures walleye being caught. Where are they? Please help. I'm going back out on Thursday or Friday. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

It is a Beg N Brag board & tkw, you came to the right spot. :D :D

Here we go again, though I better post this before Grizz or one of the boys get at you.

At the present time the safest ice is Big Bay off Big Island and probably the flats at Trenton. As for the hot spots - most of those areas are not safe or open water at the present time because of the unseasonably warm winter that we have had and the wind and currents created by the river flow from all the rain. Over the last 35 years, the hotspots are Baker's Island east of Trenton off Weese's side road, Onderdonks across from Trenton, the mouth of the Trent River. Akins just east of the narrows at the little island. Another great spots is Anderson Shoal out from the conservation park at Potter's Creek.
Bellevile area - Rush Bar (south side of Bay east of Belleville), - the narrows between Massassauga Park and Pt. Anne. Of coarse Telegraph narrows that is complete wide open now. North west side of Forester's Island at Desoronto not safe now, open water. The powerline at Green Pt., Huff's and Thompson's Point. All these areas are narrow parts of the Bay that will funnel the transient fish through that area in deeper water as they migrate up the Bay to their spawning grounds. When the Bay narrows in these areas ,the current is accelerated and the increased water speed creates unsafe areas. During the late winter when the walleye reach the spawning areas or river mouths early they just wander around that basin until they are ready to run the river to spawn or to spawn on one of the Bay's gravel bars. Read the Deathfromaboves thread, they were fishing Adolphus Reach in a boat on the 27th and nailing big eyes. The walleye are still moving into the Bay from lake Ontario.

For all these reasons a good spots is very hard to predict from day to day. Remember the walleye that are in a spot today will sure as hell not be there the next day. They are continually moving. I think all the old Quinte veterans would agree with me on the walleye movement.

Tkw, you would not find me at Huffs or Hickory Lane right now for 1,000 bucks. Not safe. And after the next 2 days of plus 5 temps it will be even more treacherous.

Later
Al

Off County Rd 9 in Napanee. Go through Napanee and turn right on River Rd just past the Pioneer gas station. River Rd turns into County Rd 9. Keep travelling and you will pass Dew Drop Inn. Huffs is on your right and Hickory is past Huffs, also on your right.

There is open water out from Quick Short Road, also two felows out fishing near huffs this morning, but the ice looked really sketchy from county road 15(Greenpoint road)

For your begging tip....95% of the fish I have iced this year are only because I could see them. A flasher unit has proven key as usual. If you do have a flasher unit and are not catching, try paying closer attention to the "mood" of the fish. You will know which fish are more "catchable". Those of you who have a flasher know you don't ever fish with out it. If you forget it at home, you go get it. :ugeek:

Thanks a whole bunch! I will be out again this week and I'm considering buying a flasher. Any recommendations?

Quinte Prince and I both like our Lawrance X67C unit. They have multiple screens. Flasher mode, sonar, split screen sonar ( which i use a lot in deep water). I also use this unit in the summer up north fishing on the back lakes in my 14 ft. tinny.

I think there an x67 on the used board for a great price, or you can get a humminbird ice 35 for fairly cheap and they are pretty good units for the price

i have an old fl-8 vex, entry level, it works but yes it is loud. may upgrade soon but has been fine for me.

i know some of the guides provide flashers, perhaps a day with one might teach u alot about fishing with a flasher and maybe they have different brands u can compare to see which one you like....just might be a good way to try before you buy.

honestly getting a guide on quinte was about the best thing i did......even tho the fishing wasn't hot i drilled them on access points, current areas, safer ice locations, fish migration, what type of rod, line, spoons....made them look thru my box and recommend in order which ones to use, etc.

The most common are vexilar, humminbird, marcum. They all have their own unique features and can range from 3-6 hundred depending on where you purchase your unit. Humminbirds are big and bright and are much quieter than a vexilar or marcum, but are not as durable. If you baby your stuff I recommend a humminbird. If you have your flasher in sleds and bumpy areas (being towed) than you may be better of with a Vexilar. Both offer high and low end models and you pay for luxury features accordingly. Ultimately its what you can afford or justify based on how much you fish. regardless of which model you purchase having your "eyes" definately helps you become a more efficient angler. good luck
