Seen it a few times along the shores of Lake Simcoe. Only a lot thicker. Scary how close it gets to the homes.

I have pics from the early 60's in Adulphustown Reach between the Glenora Ferry and the gap the ice is piled up over 25 feet high for a miles along the north shore . Spring time with the rt wind.

back in the day they took aerial photos of that area and found scratch marks on the lake floor and couldn't figure out how they got there.. the ice not only got piled up but also forced down 25 to 40 feet and dug into the lake bottom creating long scratches.. what power...

What is scary is how close the homes get to the lakes. This is not uncommon for Wellers Bay it is part of Lake Ontario. This wind will have little effect on the bay because there is no thaw. If anything the wind chill it brings will make more Ice were there is Ice. Places west of the ferry were there is open water will take a hit but that is it. South winds don't do to much to the bay once it has frozen over...

I heard that there was some open water on Wellers. Where and how much is open I do not know. I imagine the east end is still OK as I saw a hut out there friday on the way to work but I noticed that they had brought a couple to shore.

I was out last Thursday (Just walking the dogs, no fishing), and across the south end of the bay there was some open water spreading northwest from Consecon Creek, and a large patch of open water around the soutwest "corner" of the bay.

I highlighted (roughly) where the open water was in this picture:

Maybe I'll take another walk out there now and see how it is.

The area marked in blue arrows is where I would probably fish in the weed lines. Is this your markings from your walk? I have to assume if this is where you walked it is safe?

Yup, the line with the blue arrows is the track from my GPS where we walked. As for it being safe, I have NOT drilled a single hole, nor been able to talk to anyone who has. I feel pretty good about it, and about a week ago there were 4 wheelers and sleds out there, so I guess they did too.

Here's an image from today's walk - the orange areas are, very approximately, areas that I know there's open water. Heading north along "the island" I couldn't get a real good view (was with my dogs, and I actually turned back due to a pack of coyotes!), but I'm guessing that the storms have broken a new path through the sand spit and there'a a good current coming through.

Image

There's one sole hut out there - it's roughly halfway from the "Y" in "Weller's Bay" on the map and my track directly south of it. (Should be a good spot there - good transitions on the bottom).

If only I owned a darned auger, I'd be fishing!

Paul
