Found this on a shotgun forum:

The Winchester/Cooey Model 840 went into production in 1968.The Cooey Model 84 went into production in 1948 and was produced until 1961 when Winchester purchased Cooey. From 1961 until 1967 it was produced as the Winchester Cooey Model 84.

All Model 84 models whether manufactured by Cooey or Winchester /Cooey are better built shotguns than the later Model 840.The Model 84 is one of the best single shot mass produced shotguns in my opinion. That is not to say the 840 is not a good shotgun just not as well made. The 84 had steel construction through out.The 840 had plastic and alloy in a lot of its construction.

In 1968 Winchester cheapened the Cooey line of firearms just as they had done to the Winchester line in 1964.The results were not good. :)

Winchester produced two single shot shotguns in the old Cooey plant in Cobourg,Ontario,Canada that used the same action as the Model 840.These were the Winchester Model 370(1968-1972) and Winchester Model 37A (1973-1979).

Ok , have the shotguns in hand , the 20 gauge is a winchester-lakefield mossberg 500C, chambered for 2.75 to 3" shells,28" barrel, full choke needs some tlc,the stock is in good condition, have had it looked at and its been valued at 150$ by a professional, the other shotgun is a winchester/western cooey model 840 single shot 12 gauge, stock in very good condition, needs re-bluing,full choke, in present condition it has been valued at 100$
