Hey Guys,

I have been watching and reading what I loosely call discussion on the board. I have a favor to ask of you all. You see anyone who is complaining about too much sharing going on should direct their critism at me as I am the one who put this board up. This board is intended to share information. This board is a community pot.
The concept of a community pot is this. I know a mechanic who is a buddy. Another buddy of mine is an electrician, yet another is a teacher, an accountant and so on. Each have skills. I have various skills. I used to install pools and I do websites on the side. Some of my buddies have pools. When I have an electrical problem I call my electrician buddy. When he has a problem with his pool he calls me. My son may be having problems with his homework so I call my buddy the teacher. Sometimes a buddy calls who needs my help but has no direct skills to offer. I help anyway. Once in a while someone moves and then everybody jumps in to help. Once in a while I tackle the small electricial problem by myself then call my buddy to tell him and he says "Way to go". I then rib him that he charges way too much and he's a crook. We all laugh. Collectively we all give and take from the community pot.

If I jab at the guys when I need help and they jab at me when I ask them then pretty soon no one calls anyone and we all lose the community pot. Dont get me wrong. Sometimes my buddies and I have misunderstandings or disagree on stuff but in the end we work it out.

My favor to ask is this. Please use this board in the spirit of a community pot. Thanks
Dan

Good message Dan.

I believe there are a few guidelines that if followed will help ensure the board gets used as intended.

1. If you're expressing an opinion, understand that it is open to rebuttal. Keep the dialogue constructive, upbeat and don't get personal. Respect that we all have a right to our own opinions.

2. Get the egos out of the equation. Fisherman come in all shapes, sizes and levels of expertise. What's a stupid question to some is perfectly valid and legitimate to others.

3. Post when you have something to say. It doesn't have to be rocket science or profound but it should add value at some level.

4. We all love to fish but let's keep it in perspective. It's not life and death so lighten up !

Well said Dan and VERY TIMELY considering the content and tone of some of the recent posts. Great Board. Lets keep it that way. If you want to express opinions that do not fit the spirit of the board, I suggest they go by personal email...so the rest of us do not have to suffer.

I agree with Dan,

The board is here to help one another. I see it as a sportsperson helping another sportsperson in the spirit of commrodery. I haven't personally met anyone on this board outside of Hay Bay Larry, but most share what I like to do and that is fish and learn as much as I can about the sport.
Keeping with the spirit of the intent of this board there is a kind of silent code of conduct. We all need to be respectful of that.

Regards  Go Fish

I agree. I've seen this type of discussion on other boards which continually spawns attacks on any type of post.

I do feel there was a personal attack against one of the site sponsors. His posts are typically informative regarding fishing techniques and others started badgering him. Now I'm not going to comment on the reponses that followed, only the initial sarcastic remark against him. I have never been provided any information from a charterboat operator ever!! They typically will not identify what they are using, depth, speed, etc. unless they are communicating amongst each other. The site sponsor does provide information but he doesn't give you written instructions on what to do. Fishing is a learning experience - each time you go out you have to adapt to all the conditions. He has provided you with some info which you have to learn by trial and error.

Another way to think about this is that part of his livelihood is his guide service. Why should he divulge all his info which may impact his livelihood? What gain would there be for him? What company would provide their trade secrets which would only profit others which would ultimately put them out of business? That is why charterboat operators do not pass on all their little secrets.

From the posts I've read in the past regarding the site sponsor, he has received much acclaim for sharing his knowledge. It would be a shame to have lost a valuable resource from this site due to attacks from others.

The "site sponsor" has also done his fair shair of attacking, needling, and attempting to raise the ire of others. Everyone involved should knock it off and stick to supporting each other in the spirit of fishing.
I for one, really enjoy learning more about walleye fishing by closely following this Board, but am certainly tired of many of the childish posts that I have read in the past month or so.

i would like to see the posts that go too far afield get zapped where it is a personal attack rather then a attack or debate over differences of opinion. the debates over what we think can be interesting but the comments about who we are as people dont add anything worthwhile. also, i've met some of the people who have been put down during the posts and the assessments about them as people are actually really inaccurate anyway (in my opinion). generally speaking i have found over the years that avid fishermen tend to be some of the best people there is. over the last few years at quinte i've had complete strangers help me, break my boat out from the ice at dock at tip of bay and then tow me to ramp, Dan offered to lend me tools to help break ice etc., last year a guy in 4x4 pulled my van and boat out of water at ramp at glenora, plus guys have given me bits of info that made an ok trip great etc etc. i now have a 4x4 so i will be returning the favour to a "stranger" myself in near future no doubt.

Was it a Jeep that pulled you out?
If so Hi.............

On topic., This has been a great board for years. The sharing of info large and small is part of what makes this a great site. If some wants to post info they should not have to worry about getting flamed. The only FLAMING should be under the "COMMUNITY POT" full of chilli.

Thanks for all your work Dan, I am sure the BS doesn't make the job any easier.

Safe Fishing First,
Jack
