After reading the countless critical posts of the fisheries people and OPP,can't this forum of fisherman come up with some no cost help to some of the problems like over-harvest? How about we all throw some ideas here and see if some are feasible. In the states where I live, the Game commision people bring on board non paid deputies during open seasons to help patrol game lands. You could get volunteers to man boat launchs periodically and check just for catch limit violations. How about also going around too all the resorts and have them post the slot regs in their fish cleaning stations, also post these at each boat ramp. Most of the ramps in my state have a large billboard with regs and maps right at the launch area.I'm sure someone can meet with the fishery and gather support for a volunteer work force. Now that the word is out about the fishing,I think following along this line may help continue this fabulous fishery. roughrider

Your ideas all have potential merit, in a management climate that is receptive to change. MNR has some good people, in both the frontline and management, but is largely focused on a ensuring maintenence of the status quo. It is far too nervous about self preservation instead of how to better the overall operation be it enforcement or fish hatcheries. The late R. Amsbury wrote a very good report, about the various aspects of the operation (I believe I still have a copy in Ont). Everything that you suggest is very proactive.....which is a concept, contrary to the often reactive management actions put forth.

Personally, I welcome it when more creative initiatives are brought forth by management. There are a lot of great ideas employed across N. America let alone in other parts of the world.

One avenue that your suggestions might be brought forth to, would be the Bay of Quinte Advisory Board. I am too far away to be of much more assistance, but am very interested in what happens in the area (I am presently assigned AB/BC in my work, and call the Napanee area home).

Another way to bring about change in items such as enforcment or regulations is to creatively leverage a position (this is tough but has been met with some limited success in BOQ). This is very difficult to describe, and I have been somewhat involved with this in the past, and will likley again be at some point in the future. I thank-you for bringing up some alternatives using creative management practices.....very good to see.

Don Stokes
