Was chatting with some buddies the other day regarding gas prices and the likelihood of even higher prices (some pundits say as high as $1.50/litre) and how it will impact them. As for myself I won't be travelling as far afield as in the past and trailering my boat to other lakes etc will be seriously curtailed. I still will go fishing as often, just not travelling the same distances etc, including here on the Bay.

At least one guy I spoke with won't be doing as many tournaments, main reason being the price of gas....

Thoughts?

I would have to say yes that gas prices will have a major impact on how much i fish this season. I know many guys that will cut back and not only on fishing but also how often they will go to there cottages and camp sites. These high fuel prices impact everything from food prices to retail survival as it cuts down on the tourism. I also have had a major beef with some gas stations ripping you off at the pump as to fuel volume. I reported 2 stations to Weights and Measure in Belleville with in the past month because i go in to fill a gas can and i am not getting what i paid for. I have a can that i measured exactly 25 liters of water and marked the level on the can and when i went to the station to get 25 liters of gas i was 2' below the line at one station and 1 3/4 below at another station. You might want to keep an eye out for this as it is happening allot....

I will be buying my gas in the states. i figure its 30-40 cents cheaper now (with rewards card discounts).
at 132 litre tank in boat, plus 65 in jeep. saving 60-80, will pay for a day of fishing in the states.
*note save the 60-80 twice, once when i get there, second time end of day when i refill to go home*
will easily save 100 a day, vs fishing here.

I think most accept that much (but not all) of what we buy here (when we can get it) is 20 to 25% cheaper in the States.

I save all year for bass season, come bass season, my gas fund goes like a cold case of beer, after a hard day of work.
Being close to the border, making ny state trips, will help me make my gas fund last longer.
Still fishing the same waters, possibly even the same spots, just launching from the other side of the lake, which is actualy closer to some of the spots i fish.
Your right we do except it, and try to buy local, but at what cost does it come....

I think its sad to hear, that high gas prices, will stop guys from doing what they love... (tournaments)

When times get tough, dont change what you do, change the way you do it.

Like Fred says, it effects every aspect of recreational spending. They tend to jack up the gas prices and once those tax dollars from recreational spending stop coming into the fat cats, you will see it drop again. What burns my britches is in the city you can claim your transit expense on your income tax. Why can't I claim some of my gas reciepts for driving to work and buying groceries either that or run a bus past my rural home.

I really don't even consider it. If I wanna play , I gotta pay. Converting out the inboard V6 and installing a 225 E-Tec outboard, fuel cost will reduce for me due to better fuel mileage.

Gas is the least of my worries, LOL. The cottage and trailer rentals and the days off work kill me on long weekends, or 3 or 4 day outings. My Saturday morning outings may be confined to lakes closer to home though. Probably won't be doing the 2-3 hour return trip for 1 day anymore. If I lived in Quinte Region, a 15-30 min drive to the launch wouldn't be an issue. I wish I had that luxury!!!! Like Gene said, "If you wanna play, you gotta pay!!!"

Nope. It's not like gas went from free to over $4 a gallon. I don't like the increase, but I can't do anything about it. Gas is a minor part of our trip to Canada, and I will continue to fish as usual around here.

If you live close enough to the border you can weather out the price of fuel fairly well.
My bass boat took $200.00 to fill last year and if prices go to $1.50 or close to it I will be buying a smaller aluminum and kicker for most of my pre-fish and pleasure day's out in the inland lakes.
I'd like to see those speculators get the boot again, a couple years ago while they were out the gas prices plummeted to upper $ .70 for awhile. Also would like to see some kinda kick back to oil produced here in Canada and not imported...a pipe dream right....one that empties in the states and is sold cheaper!!! :x

Gas prices are on the rise, however the Native reservation at highway 49 and county road 2 has inexpensive gas typically 8-10 cents a litre cheaper than anywhere else. When I am at my trailer I wait till my SUV and gas cans are empty and go buy 150 litres at at a time.
It really helps!
