Every year on opening weekend I see the MNR/Coast Guard/OPP on the water checking for fishing license, boaters card and safety equipment and I always laugh when I see them escorting a boat off the water and handing them a fine because they didnt have all the required safety equipment on board. Take a moment and click on the link. It goes to Transport Canada website to a page linking to the required safety equipment based on the size of your boat. Do you have everything?

Thanks Dan. I always check every year, just in case new laws have come out. Don't remember seeing #3 on the list (reboarding device) from previous years. Don't think I fall under that category, but will have to check.

Your local Power Squadron has a courtesy check program where they will check out your boats safety equipment and try to answer any questions you might have.

Great job Dan for posting this! Don't forget the ownership/registration for your boat. This applies to boats that have registration numbers on them. Any boat with a motor on the stern higher than 9.9hp needs registration numbers.

Another thing to check is the date of your flares. If they are outdated you will get a ticket. They used to just show the date of manufacture, and I think they are good for 4 years from this date. They often now show expiry dates that makes it easier. Make sure your flares are good, disposing of the old ones is a pain. DO NOT fire them off or throw them out. Call your local OPP station,I believe they will take them or have drop off dates for them.

Fred. Go to the Service Canada or maybe it's Ontario. Right across from the Regent theatre in Picton. The old Laurentian Bank. You can get them there. Dave

Also remember that the self inflating life vests do not count unless you are actually wearing it...and the co2 charges in them have an expiry date as well.

I'm pretty sure you are referrring to Licensing and not Registration which is often confused but two totally seperate things. Pleasure craft over 9.9 HP must be licensed but normally, only larger vessels carry a title registration. Anyway, here is a link to a page that explains the differences and how to do each of them with all the contact info you will need:

http://boating.ncf.ca/license.html

Do we need radar reflectors? I'm not sure if some of the larger vessels that come into essroc would use radar or not.
