Hello all, I was hoping to get some advice on the repairing of a skeg.
I have a 90 hp Honda outboard with a fairly beat up skeg. Probably about 15 % of the bottom is missing. I tried some searches on this site to see if there was any past threads on the issue but couldn’t find anything. There were other sites that had info but the opinions on those sites varied. Some people preferred welding and building the skeg back up while others thought that installing a skeg guard or cover over the existing skeg was the best.

Has anyone gotten there skeg rewelded? I am wondering if the heat damaged any internal seals in the lower end of the unit? I am also hoping that someone may be able to recommend a place somewhere between between Oshawa and Napanee that can perform this work and what approximate price tag came along with the repair?

Also has anyone installed a skeg guard for protection and has it caused anything such as corrosion or any further skeg damage?

I was hoping that someone on this board may be able to pass along some info from their experiences. Any experiences both good and bad will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Macman (Chris)

try petes prop shop on the outskirts of belleville.
On a side note what size boat do you have your honda on.
ive been looking at a boat on kijiji with a 2004 90 hp honda on a 17.5 aluminium
not sure if that is a little underpowered.
thanks and good luck

wlc- I have the 90hp 4 stroke motor on a 17ft lund (2006). I can get it up to 34mph. I had a 90 hp merc 2 stroke on the same same sized boat and could go 43 mph.
I would say the motor is adaquate for the boat. I can get it up on plain pretty easy and since I am not a tournament fisherman, i am not in a huge hurry on the lake. Had i purchased the boat/ motor from new, i probalby would have gotten the 115 depending on the price difference but I am happy enough with 90.

Thanks,
mac

I bought a 17 foot Legend Cyclone with a Honda 50hp 4 stroke last November, a nice step up from a 14 ft - 15hp. With my son and me it clocked 38 mph on the GPS in calm conditions trimmed out. Luckily it came with an extra prop as I took a 1/4 inch bite out of one of the blades going through the channel at Barcoven. I need to visit Pete's as well.

I have done many of them, i do it the same way the guy in the video does it.
you can buy the replacement skeg online.
(I am how ever a licensed welder, so it doesn't scare me to weld it)

As long as it is not bent and there is enough there to protect the prop ..... leave it. A chunked up skeg willl not make you lose speed or affect handling.

I know that welding big HP engines is not recommended; if done wrong (or even right) can cause failure . For me, i would never consider welding as an option, and would definitely go with a chrome skeg guard.

Just curious...What would it cause failure to?? Not saying you're wrong, just wondering??

Thanks

Thanks for taking the time to respond and post the video as well, very helpful. I have been in contact with the mentioned shops and could get the work done in a couple of weeks (busy time). A third option that was brought to my attention is to use JB Weld. Has anyone tried this? I am not a welder so unsure of what bonds or holds with what exactly, but I think the skeg is a Cast Aluminum???? Would the aluminum JB Weld bond with the skeg?

Thanks again,
Macman
