I took my girlfriends brother Jim out for the day on Saturday. I was worried that his day would get cut short because of the high winds they were calling for. As luck has it they never got that bad and we stayed out until 4:30.

Well our day didn't start so great. We were struggling with the planner boards for about an 1/2 hour. They kept popping off of the line, so we decide to just flat line for awhile so I could check the clips on the boards. Not marking anything while messing around with the planner boards we just started at 100' back from the boat.

We trolled up to Kieths Shoal and around that area for about 4 hours then trolled down the shore line up to the point across from the cement plant and called it a day.

I always give the guest in my boat the first fish when trolling. This was Jim's first walleye in a very long time and a personal best for him :)

Here is the information on Jim's catch.
Weather Conditions: Cloudy
General Area: Between Keiths Shoal and the Ferry -South Side
Lure: Tail Dancer Deep Diver 30' Foot Model
Color: Black/Purple/white
Line: 10lbs Berkly XT
Depth: 30 -40 (I believe)

Trolling Speeds: 1.5 - 2.0
Water Temp: 40 degrees
Fish: Walleye
Length: 30"
Girth: 16.5"
Status: Released

Here is a his big fish.

My scale is not very accurate so I don't use it anymore. Anybody got any guess on what they wieghed?

We didn't catch a lot of fish but the 2 we did land were big, what more can you ask for. How often do ya tell somebody "You gotta come with me there are big fish here" and you take them out and they actually get to land a big one :) What a way to end the season!

The only problem is both fish were the same size. So we can't argue on who's is larger LOL!

This is my first season fishing this area and I love it! Thank you eveybody for thier tips which helped me land 2 personal bests in 1 day :)

to:Ranger Guy-Try using the snapper clips on your planer boards or for a little cheaper try the Off Shore tackle red clips with the pin in the middle.Either one will keep your boards from coming off.

Thanks Fish Hound.

I think I'll grab those snapper clips. It was very frustrating wrapping the line around the clip and steering the boat at the same time LOL!

The OR-18 (i think) are the new clips that will handle the line(either mono or braided).

They're great.

My buddy and I were wondering why you were doing doughnuts out there Sat. morning and seemed to be going a little fast. I was in white/red Skeeter tiller. For only 3 or 4 boats working a good size area, you made it interesting for boat traffic. But we realized what happened after watching you pick up a board and finally settled in to a straighter slower trolling pattern.

The newer snapper releases made by Offshore should work pretty good. But for ease of use and holding fireling (or any braid for that matter), try using Church Tackle Clips. They are very simple to use for taking on/off and have been using them now for 4 years with Fireline and love them. I replaced both the front and rear ones on each board (they run about $7/pair).

I haven't found a length and girth walleye weight calculation yet, but the most common is length x length x length / 2700. This is the standard one for all species. I'm looking for a walleye species only that includes girth measurements since most of these bigger 'eyes can really put on on meat/fat between the eyes and tail. Walleye Central has a calculator that utilizes both the length and girth, I just haven't figured out the formula yet.

Thanks Stormsearch

I'll look those clips up :)

Yeh eventually I just put one wrap around each clip to help keep them on.

It's funny that you said we made it interesting for boat traffic. We were quite a distance from the rest of pack.

Long before we made it down to that end my guest Jim said "How come those boats are so close together down that end? I replied "They must be working a school of them or they wouldn't be trolling so close to each other"
