Are you still required to have a Licence to operate a VHF Marine Radio. I have had my ROC-M for a long time now but a couple of friends of mine were telling me that you do not need a Lic any more. ???

Yes, you are still required to hold an operators licence....though I have never been checked.

From Transport Canada

Do I need a radio operator's certificate?

Marine radiotelephones fitted onboard Canadian vessels, must be operated by a person holding a Radio Operator's Certificate (ROC-M). Commercial vessels required to fit Digital Selective Calling or a satellite ship earth station must employ radio operators holding a Radio Operator's Certificate - Maritime Commercial (ROC-MC).

Industry Canada has delegated the ROC-M to the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons (CPS) and courses are available in many areas. Further information can be found on the CPS website.

Yes you do. There is some confusion. You do need a operators card but you do not need a station license for recreational use in canada. I just completed my Roc with dsc endorsement.

Fred

Contact the POwer Squadron - they give the course.

There's the answer right there - do the course and then operate with impunity

To answer Freds Question better, You need the operators licence but the station licence is optional in Ca. If you cross out of Ca. you should have a station licence.

i will never never understand why they make it difficult for someone to try to be safer. Whats next a 60 dollar course in order to use and have a fire extinguisher on board

I think the idea is to help make us safer. I actually learned alot by taking the course. There is alot of things you may not do or do wrong that could impact either yours or someone else's rescue. Like most people in the class had no idea they had to register their radio and get a MMSI number. Well the little red button is pretty useless without it. I think anyone with a Vhf should take the course. And it really wasn't as boring as I thought it would be. The exam is pretty easy too.

if they thought it was that big of a deal maybe they should offer the course free of charge this way most everyone would have the course . think about this next time you hear of a boating accident on the water. you can rest assured that person had there boaters safty corse at the cost of 45 bucks, did it help them ?? as they say. there is no cure for stupid......... and common sence just cant be tought!

We are doing them for free grizz, after cost of coarse material, test , registration and producing a license card we might get $10 to keep the squadron afloat. If we had to pay for our volunteers gas we would be in the hole.

polli. $60 is $60 this does not equate to free in my books....... not knocking the power squad just sayin..... im sure the couse dosnt change from year to year if it does then thats all the more reason it should be ...FREE..... but come on i should not have to pay for a book to learn from, i should not have to pay to registir. and a simple piece of paper is fine i really dont need a nice flashy credit card type thing i may never have to produce ..... i am not against taking this course im just against having to pay 60 bucks and give up loss of work and my time to take this couse and i also have gas expences. and i need all this to send out a Mayday or a pan pan from my boat ?? there is many many boats out there who do not have a radio because they are afraid to get arrested for not having the proper licens how about the guy who just cant aford it ? how about the guy who works on saturdays?
I have a friend who sells fishing licenses. this year they told him he also has to sell hunting licens as well with all his paper work he makes a grand total of 75 cents for each licens he sells, and he has to have high speed internet....... last week they came to his place and dropped off 30 boxes of fishing regulation books, and 20 boxes of hunting books,,,,,,,,,, last year he sold 11 fishing licenses..... seems to me if they print so many books like that they could print a few for your cause, and make them totally reusable and free for the cause. i wonder. do you think there will come a time when you cant use a cell phone while on a boat unless you get a proper licens that teaches you how to dial 911?
