We all know the King is the KING OF THE LAKE. Next folks usually value the Bows, while I put the Browns next. Coho's are loved for their bbq taste. However, Lakers often get the shaft. Sunday was different.
I launched out of the Lift Bridge for sunrise and headed to McIssacs. I worked the scum which had formed from the East winds the day before, marking TONS of fish. A buddy of mine was out there working the same scum line in his kayak. After three hours without a hit, and constant clearing/cleaning of the lines, I had enough.
The lake was as flat as I had ever seen it. Too bad Slammin wasn't on Sunday - man, what a day! I came in tight to my comfort zone and trolled by Shell Pier. All the bait and colour from the day before was gone, so I made my way to Bronte. Lots of colour there, and bait, but still no strikes.
Continued up the shore to 16 mile, then to Credit....lots of beautiful water, great water temps, no bait or fish.
Around Promanade I decided to change it all up, go out to 150' of water, and try really deep. One extreme to the other.
As I passed 120' of water, I noticed some huge hooks on bottom.
Ok, well, I know they are likely lakers, but what the heck, they might be kings.
Set up one of my favourite deep water combo's - a hawg wild spoon behind a hawg wild (gold backed) spinny and dropped them back 240' on a #2 dipsy setting.
It wasn't there for a minute when she fired.
I knew right away what I was into...well, at least it broke the skunk.
As I was reeling in the fish, my other dipsy fired...another laker. Got both of them in.
Decided to set back up, and continued to pound on the lakers. I have never focused an afternoon like I did on pure lakers. I caught and released almost 20 in 4 hours of fishing....all between 12lbs and 19lbs or so. Biggest I weighed was 19.2 lbs.
I took a variety of photo's which didn't include me bringing them into the boat. Mostly shook them off boatside, or did a release photo with the bigger ones. Overall, a great way to spend a beautiful solo Sunday afternoon. Tunes were blaring, sun was shining, it was great! I think if you were anywhere on the North Shore Sunday Afternoon, you heard my music...my new stereo kicks ass! I didn't want to get off the water, however, I got the dinner call at 5pm, and agreed to get home for 6pm. I was home for 6:40...I stretched it out as long as I could. I had a freaking blast!
Here's some photo's of the laker fun.
My last two fish of the day I decided to bring aboard for a timer shot. These were the average size Lakers I was playing with. SO MUCH FUN with the right tackle.
Still haven't caught a Bow yet this year, but boy have the other trout species, and salmon, been fun!
