Hi everyone I am new to the forum and the area. I did a search on targeting sheepshead but it seems like you guys all catch them by accident more than anything. Last year I caught one by accident as well from shore and was wondering what you can use to actually try and catch one? I have been taking our 4 year old out and I think he would get quite the kick out of seeing one of these so any help would be appreciated.

We would be fishing from shore and I have seen them here a couple times but no luck on catching one as of yet.

Thanks,

Dylan

These things will hit anything you put out there from a worm harness to stick baits, my brother hit into a 17lber last weekend fishing from shore at the trent river.

Sheepies (freshwater drum) actually put up a really good fight and will chase just about anything that swims. You can't beat throwing live minnows or spinners tipped with a worm at them...

I agree live minnows, spinnerswith worm or jig tipped with worm or minnow.

Based on my experiment last fall they taste pretty good too.

How did you do it up?

I think the next small one I catch it going to go through some experiments too. Saltwater drum is table fare back home. I think I'll fry some fresh and I've also heard that chunks can be boiled and buttered as po' man's lobster.

Thanks for all of the replies will be trying all of the suggestions. Only caught panfish today but I watched a guy catch a 5+ large mouth right next me he said he didn't catch one that size all last year poor guy!!!

When you say spinner you mean like a mepps or blue fox? Any size or pattern in particular?

Thanks again

Get a bag of Gulp tubes and use a 3/8 oz jig head. but a bag of spinners for jigs, the same kind you would use on walleyes. Drop shot them or jig, you will get tons of Sheep. I use these to determine how far the walleye are out of the Belleville area. When you start catching lots of sheep there, move East.

simple number 3 spinner (mepps, bluefox, etc) and tip a small piece of dew worm to hook....

that'll do it!

(or get JimW to guide you!)

I filleted the sheepie, the flesh was pale yellow with a darker colour along where the lateral line would be, I trimmed off the darker colored flesh, cut into bite sized pieces, a little Fish Crisp coating and deep fried. Flesh turned white and nice and flaky when cooked. This was a 12 pound beast I cooked up. Smaller ones might be even better.

I plan to try it again this year cooked as "poor man's" shrimp or lobster.

Enjoy!!

Seen a couple massive ones today but still no luck lol as soon as I try for something else (or when he's not around) I will catch them like crazy. My Dad told me last year after I caught the one that they are supposed to be pretty good smoked.
