After last weekends fun playing with the Lakers in front of Bronte and towards Hamilton, which I must admit, I stumbled across unexpectedly, I decided to see what more I could come up with.

So far this year I hadn't broke out the light action spinning rods. Last year I used them off the riggers all last August for Kings and then again at the Sheephead tournie last October.

I figured this would be a perfect opportunity to break out the light sticks and put a pattern together off the riggers for the lakers.

Initially I could only get fish on the divers, set back 230', on a number 2 setting. The riggers were silent. I needed to figure out a way to get the riggers working.

After a number of changes and combo's, we changed to a dark coloured big Ern spoon - we found the ticket.

Fishing 110' to 125' of water, with riggers set down 85', using big spoons, the pattern was set.

The number of 20lbs + fish taken in the following two days was incredible. I would put this fishing against ANY northern lodge, Plummers included! We may not have the 40lbs fish, but the number of 20lbs fish out there, which are approaching 30lbs, is amazing. Not to mention they are accessed virtually for free. Not many want to even target these beasts - well, except me and a few others. I learned years ago there is more to fishing than "one or two" species. I'm now adding Lakers to the list of my targetted species.

We all like photo's - so here's some of my favourite. All fish were released. Average size Laker caught was between 12-14lbs, they were shook off boatside.

These fish are not horsed in quickly with the tackle we are using. You start by standing....then slowly move to sitting during the long, strong battles.

Yes, many feel small lakers on King Salmon tackle is boring - It is. But what about big lakers on light tackle? TONS OF FUN! Do you think Andre was having a blast?

Way to go Steve - always pushing the envelop for further angling pleasure.

Those are monsters - bigger than C Wrays lakers off the Niagara Bar.

Congrats on solving the puzzle.

Those are some beasts for sure. What was the water temp up your way, wondering if ours may be down deeper now too.

my surface temp was 53 degrees.

I'm unaware of the temps below, as I don't have down speed/temp.

Thanks Speed.

I love fishing, but even more, I love finding success "out of the box".

If the crowd goes right, I go left.

If the crowd fishes deep and off shore, I go up high and shallow.

Sometimes this works, other times it doesn't.

But no matter what, I know I'm doing it on my own.

I learned this from my old man when I was very young. Not exactly sure the direction Spoonpullers is taking, and as such, keep your eye on this board, as it is only last remaining internet board (public ones) that I am going to continue to post on.

I've been here for almost 10 years, and I love the member base, and board admin staff. Great folks!

Have fun out there, and never be afraid to drop me a PM if you have any questions. I'll always do my best to respond as soon as I can.

Thanks again for the kind words.

Steve
