Does anyone have car tires on your bass boat trailer? Im wondering about fishtailing at 401 speed because of soft sidewalls?
Im haulin' 21' duel console with tandem axel. Should I get the proper 6ply load rated tires or do car tires work ok?

And does anyone know where is a cheap place to get trailer tires.
Thanks for your advice!

Hey Dusty. I had good luck with the RezBoyz for my truck tires and they can order in most brands of tires. Give them a call and see what they can quote you at.

Cheers!

Go with the trailer tires, they are load rated. How much is your boat worth? Consider the differance in tires as cheap insurance.

What about calling the wreckers to see if they have a used pair of trailer tires? Cheaper than brand new.

This is not safe, it will be a hazard to yourself, others and your geer. Just google trailers and the name of the city you are nearest and a bunch of trailer dealers will come up. They all can order and install tires. You can also pick up the ATV / Boat version of Auto Trader, this will identify most large trailer dealers in and around the GTA.

You should try ny state as well, if your friends with any of the quinte bass anglers members, they can probably bring them back for you.
I think they have a few more events still this month in ny.

go with trailer tires. I put a set of regular new car tires on my trailer and am only carrying a 18' aluminum boat with a 70 Johnson. and it swayed a lot. DON' T even think of car tires. My two cents worth. Tryhard.

There is a lot of debate on this issue, google will pull up lots of opinions. Trailer tires are typically rated slightly higher (for the same size), and trailer tires are available in bias or radial. I am not of aware of any law regarding the use of 'car' tires on a trailer; you have to make sure your tires are not overloaded but I don't believe there is any restriction on the type you can use. If anyone has a link to this law please post it!

A good source for trailer tires is Cerka http://www.cerka.ca/

I also just bought a pair from Princess Auto, 205-75R14 for $140 - with galvanized rims. They might still be on sale. check out princess auto, they have other sizes on sale starting June 5th.

I would suggest checking your tongue load; IMO if you have sway then that is an indication that the trailer is not loaded properly. Your tongue weight should be between 5 - 10% of the weight of the trailer load. For your boat I would want 75 lbs on the ball as a minimum. Stiffer tires on the trailer might help this but you are only treating the symptom of the problem.

I agree with Mr. Blaney,

If you trailer is not tracking perfectly behind you, you probably do not have enough tongue weight. If you have a 3000 lb boat and trailer you should have 200-300 lbs on your tongue. Use a scale to check it. If you can lift it, it is probably too low.

My vote is for trailer rated tires. Recently got a new set of Marathon Goodyears for my EZ loader. They are on most good quality trailers.

Also check recommended tire pressure for your rig. Tire pressure will be higher than you vehicle. Typically 40-45 lbs. If the pressure is too low, they will run hot and possibly fail.
