Hi guys,

When drop shotting for smallies this coming season should I be using straight fluoro or braid and a fluoro leader? Any suggestions would be appreciated as I'm relatively new to this technique.

Thanks.

Mike

Both work well. Straight floro can have line twist issues, with out a swivle, have had this problem. (it will tangle around your top rod guide)
The pro's use bigger size reels to so they have alot more floro on there reels, seems to help.

Try both, I dont think one is better then the other, its all preference.

I think 6-12 are most common, with a properly set drag, and not jerking the fish, light line is not a issue.

If you don't have a very sensitive rod you will miss light bites, i had this problem as well.

You picked a perfect place to ask this question, you will get lots of great responses.

I will use straight Gamma floro 5-7 lb test (very little stretch) for shallow, clear water, or finicky fish, in deeper water, stained water, or where the fish don't seem to be line shy I will have 20lb power pro (no stretch) with a 8-10lb floro leader.

Drag setting I find is a key for shollow and deep smallies. Have had great success with MH 7ft graphite rods and 10 lb mono Trilene Sensation without fluro lead.
Also have had equal success with 3 1/2" salt tubes dragged or jigged. Hook setting should be quick with the bite to avoid the smallies inhaling too deeply. If they're teasing you add a stinger for those that are just tasteing the tip of of your bait. When out of the deep make sure you fizz them if your intention is to live release later as in a tourney
Good Luck!
