Anyone ever seen this on their units??

Seems when I get less than 10 FOW I get a double reading.

I was in 7 FOW as the top line shows, but then the screen would appear like the above picture. It would also switch back and forth from the true reading to this double reading. Tried it on a few different spots on the Bay, and every time I got shallow, same thing would happen. Unit works fine in deeper water. The 15.5 depth reading (top left) was not accurate. I've had the unit for 2 or 3 years, and have never seen this before.

Take the weed off of your transducer :)

No weeds on the transducer. It's a pretty consistent flat bottom on the screen. I thought that may have been a possibility, but if that was the case, you'd think it would read shallower, not deeper. I was dragging the bottom for a bit in 10-12FOW with no weeds, and it was doing the same thing.

I usually keep my settings low, because I typically fish shallow most of the time. I don't set the sensitivity to high because the screen would be one big red blob. I fish Scugog and Rice quite often, so I know what shallow water and weeds are supposed to look like on the screen LOL. Most of the time I just use my anchor, bottom bouncer or crankbait as a "depth finder"
There's something wrong with that screen.
Anyhow, no big deal, the unit works fine other than the odd occasion. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this before.

You know thats is funney. It looks like it is showing a thermocline at 7 feet. With a surface temp of 78.2 in 15.5 feet of water and you say it is fine in deeper water. Hmm somthing to think about....

Thanks Fred, but I think a thermocline would appear different on the screen. Also, I know for a fact that my water depth was 7 feet according to Navionics, (and my anchor LOL.) It did the same thing when I was fishing a flat (10-12 Fow) Navionics was bang on there also.

Aw OK I did not know your depth was lying to you as well. This is definitely screwy and i would send that pic to Humminbird support and see what they have to say about it. I don't know what model you have looks like a 700 series but i would restore all the settings to factory default and check to see if you have the latest updates for your unit.

Try turning switchfire setting to "clear" instead of "max" when you are fishing in shallow water.

I don't use hummingbird but sometimes a hard rock bottom, as this appears to be, in shallower water will produce the double echo reading. Try setting your unit for auto gain, surface clarity to high, plus your ping to medium, as well as your chart speed to medium. You say that this doesn't happen in deeper water, probably as the sonar echo is more dispersed, but in deeper water will sometimes happen because of the dense solid rock bottom.
This has happpened on Lowrance and Eagles I have owned and that was the case with them, this is something that you may not be able to change.
Be sure to post your queries answer from Radio World and Hummingbird.

Chug Bug ...Switchfire is on clear mode. When I switch to max mode, the screen almost goes completley red.

Lar...It does appear to be a hard bottom, because of the red colour return, (which I believe is the strongest return) but I was in the Napanee River, and I would assume it was muddy and soft......Strange!!!

The lower reading on the screen would appear to be the correct bottom structure/composition, but I know for a fact the depth was 7 feet.

I have yet to get a response from anyone yet.

My 597 does this every once in a while as well. It only does it sparingly and within 10' of water. I turned my HDS7 on and it showed the same thing, or similar. I assume thermocline, or variation in water temp.
