Lots of ice, 8 or more inches in the west end of the Bay of Quinte. The last couple of days have seen some nice Walleye in 5 to 11 pound range caught in the Onderdonk area. A few Pike have also been caught in that area. A dozen or more people fishing in the Mouth of the Trent, but no word of catches.

Onderdonk is on the South shore of Bay of Quinte, from Trenton follow highway 33 toward Picton, turn east on Rednersville Rd and get onto the Bay from Weese Side Rd.

BigO,
They catch them every year in Oct - Dec at Mier's Pier in Belleville. The other area is the salmon river quarry. Be careful heading up the salmon river mouth area. Quite a few guys have written their names on the rocks with their props. If you,re interested send me a reminder next fall and I will double check with the local crappie guys.

Steve,
How's the scrapes and bruises from your trip healing. Nothing a good cosmetic surgeon cant fix. Hell I hear they can even custom design the scars. Maybe a good crash helmet is in order before your next trip down (down the steps that is). LOL!! Next time go easy on the crona. I did the Brava stuff for a while and went back to crona too.

The salmon river empties into big bay, on the north east corner of big bay. Very shallow in the mouth but once past this area you can get on plane again.

thanks dan, both for the answer and the support on the bump.....it was gone a few days later, but fun while it lasted...

Anyways, so u go up the river, then what does it open to? A Quarry? What kind of fish are in it? Is it worth going up the river? Sorry for all the Q's, but little 'out of the way' areas like this excite me!

Steve

I can tell you a few things about the Shannonville "Quarry".
We have called it the claypit for ever because that,s what it was.
There was a rich deposit of clay there at one time, of the sort one
may have used in the making of bricks. The pit was dug so close to the
river that eventually the remainder of the bank collapsed, allowing the river to rush in and flood the pit. It is rumoured that there may even have been some machinery left in there though I have never noticed anything on the depth finder that looked like an excavator?!
The pit is probably around 5or 6 acres in size and has some spots around
30 ft deep. According to the fellow who owns the only house on the pit,
he believes there may be a strong spring therein and he has had the water tested and it has come back as potable (that,s drinkable, not smokeable water).
I have not caught a walleye right in the pit, although I have caught one or two right in the entrance to the river. Everything else however seems to be in there including large pike, channel cats, every kind of panfish including crappie and especially large mouth bass.
A little known fact---there is ANOTHER clay pit right beside it, invisible
from the water and not connected, unless by some underground way,
to the river. I have had some great catches of largemouth there.
If board members would like,I can e-mail a sketch of how to get in the river from the bay. I have done it at all seasons with no prop damage
in a 26 ft boat.

damn wulf, you are the MAN! (or woman, if thats what ya are, lol)

I'd love to get the sketch. I fish Big bay often in the summer, and this sounds like a fun venture...

I run a shallow running Lund Pro Guide 17' w/ a 50 tiller...should be a right i guess eh?

Email me at cheesecake@mountaincable.net

Anymore info you have would be awesome! I'm already excited.

Yes Steve, those are the puddles. There must have been a connection to the small one at some time because there are fish of more than one species in there (i have caught bass and pike in it). The big pit is deepest at the left or west end. The place has always facinated me because it is deep in comparison to most other places in the upper bay and I have spent many an hour in there during rough weather as it is quite protected.
Hint; at some times of the year the shoreline is alive w/ little green frogs.
I,ll mail you a little sketch of the channel.
