So just to clarify, I need to purchase a Navionics sd card before I can take advantage of the free pc app?
I can't just download the app and expect it to work right? I do not use a chart plotter, i just use my garmin hand held.

what you need is MapSource. I use that with my Garmin 60csx; I think this program is far superior to the Navionics program (as a mapping software). Mapsource handles topo, bathymetric, and road maps. Ibyscus (sp?) has a free topo map for your garmin. With Mapsource you can load up your Garmin with road maps, topo (bush roads), and bathymetric in different layers and switch between them. If you want information on how to set this up send me a PM and I can offer some info.

I find Bluecharts on my Garmin handheld to be more accurate than my Elite 5 with Navionics.

It is my experience that the Garmin Bluechart data is very similar to the Navionics Hot Maps Gold. I do own both of these. They are both great charts, but once you see the difference between either the Navionics Hot Maps Premium C6 or Hot Maps Platinum C6 and these maps you will be amazed. I fished a bass tournament on Lake Ontario last weekend as a non-boater. I brought my Navionics Hot Maps Premium C6 chips with me and we compared the differences between my partner's chips and the C6. He was blown away. There was almost double the amount of detail. This detail level was critical in keying in on high percentage areas. It is pretty cool stuff.

As a side note, I used to run a Garmin handheld on a ram mount on my ATV in the winter, but when the new data set was released with Hot Maps Premium C6, I mounted a Humminbird to the ATV and use this chip on Quinte in the winter. The freshest data options are only going to make it that much better as time goes on.

The data set (contour lines, depth soundings, etc) between the Navionics Hot Maps Premium C6 and Platinum C6 are identical for the Bay of Quinte and Eastern Lake Ontario, however this is not the case in other areas from what I have been told. In the US, the Platinum has more detail than the Premium. There has been a bit of confusion on that in the past. So for Quinte, I you are not using the extra features like 3D, the Navionics Hot Maps Premium C6 does a great job and is compatible with most plotters where the Platinum needs a higher end plotter.

And as Scott mentioned, you get the PC app for free so you can study charts on your computer from the comfort of home without even needing your chip there with you.

well thanks for the read gents, good info and should be interesting to compare these. For now though I'm gonna stick with the basic navionics for the PC and throw that on my garmin map62s

on a side note, i was off work today, HURRAY! ! !, and was down at the number one dam for some bass dancing and hooked into a handful of eyes. was quite the surprise, was a great afternoon of drowning worms lol

For our local quinte waters there aren't any differences in the premium and platinum plus chips.
The big difference in the 2 is the 3-D mapping but these lakes are mostly if not all in the US.

Both chips are compatible with your 998c SI

Ya ditto on premium, save the extra $40 that platinum costs, i find my nav gold works equally as well as my premium in the larry and rideau rivers
