When bow hunting from a tree stand for deer, can I take my riffle to hunt coyotes with at the same time? I don't see anything that says you can not hunt more than one species at a time or you can not have more than one weapon. I will be on my own property and not walking around. If I see deer coming out with a yote chaseing it like last year, I would rather shoot the yote. I am guessing a warden could really question it but as long as there is no deer taken illegally then I should be OK. Any thoughts or past experiences?

I asked the MNR the same thing many years ago and was told you can only have one firearm loaded at a time. Whether it is still the same or not, I'm not sure.

Yes, but then a bow is considered a primitive weapon and not a firearm. Hmmmmmm, grey area.

I'm guessing if warden happen to be there when you shoot the yote behind the deer he is going to charge you and let the courts decide, is the yote worth the rest of your hunting season and possibly the next? I'm pretty sure he could charge you just for having the rifle because you are "in pursuit" of deer.

No, I am in pursuit of deer with the bow and I am in pursuit of yotes with the riffle. If I had a deer down with a .270 hole in it then there would definatly be something to charge me with. Can you be charged for something a warden is suspecting you are doing? Do they not need proof? If that's the case then they could walk around all day just handing out fines and say they suspect you are breaking the law. We need an "ask the Warden" catagory on this forum and get them to answer questions that we think up when we're bored.

I am old school . think of it as call your shot pool you wanna hunt yotes then have at it, hunt yotes, you wanna hunt deer then same applies but dont do both at one time, its like going deer hunting and shoot a bear because you have a tag. can you call yourself a bear hunter??? .. i think its a very gray area, but are you a HUNTER or are you just a killer?? i dont expect you to understand but once you have spent 40 years in the bush you might see it a lil differently when it comes to killing, just my 2 cents worth

I think that if I were to walk up on someone hunting and they had a bow, rifle and a deer tag and they told me they were shooting deer and yotes I'd call BS. What happens if you wound a big buck with your bow? And after hours of trying to get another bow shot an easy rifle shot presents itself. Do you use your rifle to finish the job? And is that the moment the warden steps out.....worth the fine and suspension?
I guess all I'm saying is that if a warden does appear I'm sure your not going to have a nice conversation and part ways. For sure they are going to make note of your stand...etc. Do you need that BS? :(

I've have only been bow hunting for 30 years, maybe infinate wisdom doesn't set in until 40 I don't know:lol: I am just trying to see if I could work on the coyote problem while trying to enjoy some bow hunting which was the only reason for purchasing a gun. I wasn't intending to make a huge pile of dead animals. I don't recall mentioning anything about a bear??? I don't even know where the bear came into the picture other than your post Grizz. You didn't ever say what you were up to. Are you just getting some nature shots with a camera, feeding the poor animals of the forest or do you intend to kill one of them once you gain their trust to come to your free food pile? It's pretty easy to paint an ugly picture of someones post if you want to. To answer the question about using the riffle to put down the wounded deer, NO, that is illegal. Don't take the shot unless you are certain of a kill, and there is a certanty. I have let plenty walk past that were not. I also don't have a problem with a Warden knowing were my stand is, why would you :?:
Just my $0.02, what are we going to do when they get rid of the penny

I see where every one is coming from in this post. Seems like there are some strong willed people on these forums and when you post something that they don't think is right its attack attack attack when you only are asking a question. I like the lets ask the warden post. I find the hunting regs in Ontario very vague. Cause i have a lot of questions too.

No there are only a few , and not every forum is like that. But there are always a few KIA ( know it all's) That is for the most part why a lot do not post on here. I know of a few people who have joined but will not post , due to a select few.

Is this during bow season or rifle season? I think I read that if it is bow only season for deer and you have a deer tag and a rifle with you, you are committing an offence.

Hutchy had a legit question and like many other threads lately, they seem to get taken beyond their boundaries.

To the question, I posted earlier what the MNR had told me. And they also told me I'd better be darn sure of all laws and regulations. Granted, I called a few years back and it would be interesting to see if that has changed.

My 0.02 cents worth:

FYI, a bow is considered a firearm, from the 2012 regs on page 21

"Firearms
Firearms include rifles, shotguns, air or pellet guns, bows and crossbows. You may use semi-automatic or repeating firearms for hunting in Ontario, but not handguns that are restricted or prohibited firearms or fully automatic firearms. Air and pellet pistols with a muzzle velocity less than 152 metres (500 feet) per second may be used for hunting in Ontario (see restrictions on page 22)."

In regards to hunting, I don't see the difference between shooting a rabbit while grouse hunting, a goose while duck hunting or a bear while moose hunting. For that matter, catching a salmon while trout fishing.
If you choose to focus on a specific species or trophy, that's your choice. If you like a mixed bag, that's your choice. As long as the person is abiding by all the rules and hunts or fishes ethically and to the best of their ability.

If you choose to share your questions, opinions and comments on this board, that is your choice. If you choose to learn from others on this board, that is your opportunity. And I hope you do. Bear in mind, we all have different levels of experience in many different areas. This board gives us that opportunity to discuss all these for hunting.

I would also like to know the answer to the question and if someone does find out from the MNR, it would nice if you shared the information with us.

I just called and they still stand by what they told Adventure years ago. It is just easier to regulate and then there is no doubt. As Mike said in an earlier thead, someone with less hunting ethics may be tempted to use the wrong weapon to kill or finish the job.
