Why would anyone want to close the rivers, some guys abuse it but the good out weigh the bad. The fall run ( and spring ) bring in a huge amount of cash to cobourg/porthope. Plus for guys like me without a boat it's a great time to get trophy steelhead and browns. All the salmon where stocked originally and from what I understand it's still a put and take fishery. And to top it off the shelter valley fisherman have done more leg work for the Atlantic program this year then the Mnr, if the river was closed to you think these guys would still help out.

COUPLE GOOD POSTS THERE FROM WEEDMAN AND CANTCATCHACOLD....JUST TO CLARIFY,I AM FINE WITH THE CHINOOK PROGRAM AND ONLY SEE SMALL LITTLE ATLANTICS WHERE I TYPICALLY FISH FOR RESIDENT BROWNS IN THE SUMMER,ONE WILL POSSIBLY RESULT IN THE SCARCITY OF THE OTHER.ALTHOUGH I WOULD LIKE TO CATCH A BIGGER RETURNING ATLANTIC,I ALSO THINK IT IS A PROJECT POSSIBLY DOOMED FOR FAILURE . I MENTIONED THE WESTERN STUDY ONLY TO SUPPORT MY POSITON ON THE HIGH NUMBER OF RETURNING CHINOOKS...WHICH I THINK IS A GOOD THING

All you self described experts should take a day this month or early October and visit the Altmar Hatchery on the Salmon River. This is where your salmon come from and not from the ridiculously small number put in by Ontario. NY puts in millions where Ontario puts in thousands. Salmanoids are a put and take fishery for the most part with the exception of the steelhead but the setup at Altmar raises the vast majority of all species. As far as the comments abouts ethnics taking home 4 or 5 doomed fish they are at least taking them to use as opposed to gutting them for the eggs. At great economic cost to the Pulaski area economy NY DEC banned snagging several years to their credit.

Nice reply jimdoglk. Extremely well informed. Sure the hatchery in Pulaski is great, but it is the MNR/DEC that controls how many salmon Ontario can stock. And our rediculous egg collection saved the Salmon River hatchery a few years back when they had a poor egg collection year. You want to know how many the US puts in???? 1.5 million. Ontario = 500000 (reported number but that is usually higher). Remember those numbers are set in stone so that the baitfish population doesn't crash.

Also, the eastern tribs are almost 100% natural fish on the north shore. Can't really say that about most south shore tribs. So before you stick your chest out and flame all of us who have helped out over the years as volunteers to raise salmon on the north shore, think before you type. I'm not afraid to post my real name here because I have been involved at Ringwood with egg collections, hatchery activies, and stocking as well as pen projects. I'd like to know how you have helped out this fishery.

Here, here...good to see another MEA member on here representing reality, as opposed to a bunch of guff. That is not to say that Salmon River isn't producing some excellent numbers of both stocked and 'wild' salmon too. This year has been a bonanza of staging fish down there, but our friend who posted previously about Ontario only stocking 1000's of fish needs to understand that number doesn't speak at all to the total contribution of salmon to Lake Awesome. Everyone go check out the incredible run of wild chinooks in the Ganny this fall. It's incredible, the numbers of naturally reproducing salmon some of the north shore tribs are producing in additon to the 550K which are stocked on average annually along the north shore. The real number, when including wild fish has exceeded 1.5 million some years. We're also seeing some great returns from what we believe to be our pen reared fish across the 7 ports, which started 4 years ago...if the weather cooperates, we should see a bumper crop of Kings resulting from this years spawners. The rivers are loaded with fish.

The MEA and Ringwood group will be out in the coming weeks collecting Cohos and Browns for our hatchery program for 2013. If you come across any numbers of either in the tribs, please let us know. Feel free to PM me and I'll let our guys know...

Just to correct the Weedman, CLOSA started the pen program in 2003 on the northshore at Wellington and Barcovan. This was our 10th year. I am also a MEA member and have been involved at Ringwood since 2003, long before MEA took over the hatchery.

The stocking allotment for trout and salmon in Lake Ontario is set at Lake meetings by managers from the New York DEC and the Ontario MNR. New York stocks 1,800,000 kings and Ontario stocks 540,000.

As for natural reproduction we will have an accurate number after the next 2 to 3 years of assessment on coded wire tags that were injected into the stocked kings.

Try to get along guys, :D :D :D
Al

It's good to read this incident. This is the only way some people can learn to obey the rules of fishing

Firstly I would like to start by saying I've never caught a salmon.
But,I do wonder what all the fuss is about.
These are a non-native fish that are managed as a purely put and take fishery. 95% of theses fish
Die after spawning and there is little evidence that they ever spawn successfully.
While I don't condone it, the slitting of hens would not lead to a charge.. There is no charge for waisting a non-consumable fish.
Some of us would still prefer the native Atlantics to the environmental degradation of the Pacifics..
That's my two cents..
Bob

Again, ignorance is bliss. Almost all of the fish that run the eastern tribs are 100% natural so yes, they are reproducing. And by law, you cannot let a fish spoil if it is consumable and salmon still fit into this category. From what I gather, if these were walleye, there would be a major stink but since they are not, I guess all is good.

Just referring back to Al (Trannyman's) post. Yes Al, that was my oversight in some of the ports have been doing pen imprinting much longer than others. Can't believe you guys have been at it 10 years already. Fantastic!! I know for us in Whitby, this was our 5th year I believe...I've been involved for 4 of those years and it's been great to be involved with MEA and Ringwood.

Bobber, do some more reading my friend.

The amount of natural reproduction in the lake is actually frightening right now.

If you slit a hen, you just ensured the fish is not going to reproduce. 100% for sure.
