A Word of Warning - Picton Bay

Just back(well a few days ago) from some fishing in Picton Bay and we encountered the racing fleet from the inner harbour.

We had a couple of close calls with sail boats under full sail during race night. We had a 35 footer sail by and they were maybe 25 feet away and another cut across our stern and cut two lines and broke a rod.

I know that many fishers will be fishing in Picton Bay in the following months looking for Mrs 15lber, so I am asking you to be cautious if the sail boats are out and racing around.

They come out in the evening during the week and on the week-ends..

Racing in Picton Bay is really something, it's not a big space.

Just a word of caution.

Also there is a 75 boat bass tournament on saturday and sunday, out of bellville this weekend.

So expect to see traffic in the mornings and after noons as guys head and return from the lake.

I have nothing against sailboats but I'd be pulling lines and chasing after em and getting Hull numbers. They also have to follow collision avoidance rules. Sail or not.

you seem a lot calmer than i likely would have been. I know they have the right of way but thats pushin it a little far.

I don't believe they have the right of way. If you are anchored or have lines out they are definitely in the wrong. Sounds like sail-boaters are as irresponsible as yuppy cyclists.

Some of them need to be charged to send a message.

A sailboat will always have right of way over a powered boat regardless if you were underway. The only vessel that doesn't give way to a sailboat are the multi-hundred foot freighters.

unless that powered boat is powered by an electric motor.

if that is the case, you have the right a way over the sailboat.

lol too funny Polli....... and the H.P is wrong. anyone who dosnt know this might wanna call the power squad and sign up. if the sail boat is ... UNDER SAIL.......... he always has the right of way over a boat ..UNDER POWER.......... this means if yer trolling.......... Now if you are not.... UNDER POWER......... jigging motor off. anchored or not...... the sail boat has to navigate safely . AROUND you! . if the sail boat is NOT..... Under sail then all bets are off and he now has to follow safe boating rules just like any other .MOTER BOAT!

Port Hope has the similiar issues. Every Wed. evening the local sail boat group has there races starting at 6 pm weekly. The course starts direcly in front of the piers out to 100ft fow west than east and than back.The problem is if you want to stay in the 50-100 fow of water area not a chance right of way belongs to them.Best advice do not fish wed. evening or get back to launch before they go out.

All kidding aside I would love to get some fisher people into the squadron to help support their interests more in policy and social events.
