Have seen a few guys at boat launches that have cut holes in their trolling plates for added speed and better steering. Wondering if any of you guys have done this. Any info (size of hole, etc..) would be appreciated.

Thanks

yep I used a 2 inch hole saw and cut out a center hole then i drilled 4 1.5 inch holes i needed it to get faster speads while trolling trout in the big lake where i needed more speed and i can still get my speed down to 1.2 even with the holes. also it helps let my motor run cooler as well i have a 50 hp evenrude

I went another way. Cut an extra notch so the plate deploys at a 45 degree angle.

90hp 4 Stroke merc here:

No plate = min 2.6 mph
Plate at 90 deg down (all the way): 0.8mph (forget about steering in winds over 10kph)
45 deg: 1.4 mph, no issues steering.

(I troll for trout @ 1.7mph)

Angle grinder and 5 minutes and it was done. I did it on the boat...just cover the prop so shavings don't get into your seal area.

I troll with the Electric but have been contemplating a main motor trolling device as well and though I don't have a pair, the Pro Troller Smart Tabs' versatility seem to make good sense all around.
