Snarfy, Mac and myself launched out of Picton at around 9am on Friday and trolled the Bat Cave route for an hour or two, nada. One board was set off but nothing on the end of it except the lure. Swung around and fished the Picton (east shore) area until Mac needed to be fed. Went in, then came out and trolled again until around 4......nada.
Out early on Saturday, launched out of McFarland's (not bad at all) trolled again the Picton area from McFarland's to the Gaze-Bo. Board freaked, snapped off, lure and all. Could have been a 'gator. (Is a big 'gator called a Master Gator?).
Just as we were packing it up to call it for the day, Da Snarf is reeling in his rig and is in the process of unclipping his board after handing Mac his rod, when Mac decides to take the reel off of Snarfy's rod. Da Snarf rags on Mac, Mac tells him where to go (Mux backed him up, Mux has got Mac's back) and Snarfy starts reeling in the excess line while Mac is holding the rod. As the lure nears the boat, the line gets heavy and swings to the right........Da Snarf has a 5-6lb. Walter.
The Walleyes Only crew has now caught a fish hand-lining (When Mux's reel handle fell off while fighting a fish), and Mac and Snarfy now share a fish (Mac on the rod, Snarfy on the reel). Catching fish in the conventional manner has become boring for the Walleyes Only crew, so we like to change it up.
No bait "balls" seen, but plenty of bait "clouds", so big that they should be called "bait fronts" and featured on the Weather Network. No wonder the walleyes don't want to be bothered with a single lure, when all they have to do is swim through the bait front with their yaps open......
We'll be back again in a couple of weeks for another kick at the can.
Interesting factoid : water temperature was higher near the Bat Cave than in Picton Harbor area. The lures that saw what little attention there was were purples.
