By all means, buy a Nils Master (or Cabela's high velocity) auger. I've used Mora's, Lazer''s and just about any other brand you can think of. The Nils is the easiest, fastest cutting hand auger available. You can also buy a powerhead for it if you decide you need it.

I believe the company HT (ice fishing equipment) had a hand ice auger that was supposed to be very fast. I cannot recall much more other han thinking it sounded like a solid product.

a good solid stick would work well this year. I suggest a old broken hockey stick.

I use an 8" FINBORE 3 by Normark. It cuts extremely fast compared to any other auger I've used due to the shape of the Stainless Steel Blades. Great care should be taken not to damage the blades as they cost 30$ to 40$ a set.
Believe it or not I once started cutting a hole on Quinte next to a guy with a power auger & was through 12" of ice before him.
This auger has a folding offset handle & is avalible in 6" & 8"for about $90. It can be found @ Some CTC Stores as well as @ Gagnon's in Oshawa. I would also strongly recomend getting an extra set of Blades.I was backwoods fishin for Specks last winter & was about 15 miles in when I hit a rock while drilling my first hole (Too Close to shore )which ruined my day.

Hey Skippy,

Here's a tip for using that auger.

The key to quick and easy drilling is
to concentrate on keeping the auger
shaft as straight up and down as possible
while cranking at a slow deliberate speed.
You don't need to push down hard like
on the old drills of the past. It your
technique is right the drill will go down into
the ice without alot of downward force.

Technique is key. If after using your auger
for a season it does not cut without you
needing to push down hard, it's now time
to get it sharpened. There is an address
in the Normark box where you can send dull blades
each summer. To get sharpened by a pro.
It's worth the aggrevation of cutting a hole
for 10 minutes.

It is true, you can cut a hole faster that a
power auger. You can't cut a dozen in a row
faster though. Not, without risking a heart attack.

Good luck,
BATMAN 8)
