Found this floating east of the light house today and it was very fresh....still lots of colour. Fish was over 25 inches without question and close to 10lbs.

Just a reminder, you need to keep a piece of skin on your fish for transport and I hope you included this in your bag limit of fish over 25 inches.

If you enjoyed this fish on the spot sashimi style, my deepest apologies and I hope you brought wasabi.

Well I haven't been out for a week or so, so it wasn't me! But pardon my ignorance but is this illegal to do? I must admit years ago i have cleaned a fish in the boat before departing for land. Just wondering if it is illegal to do. Assuming they did keep a piece of skin on there fillets!

I don't really know the legalities on dumping a fish carcass. It was cleaned and cleaned well, but it's best to keep a piece of skin attached given that is the law.

The fact that it was over 25 inches to boot is what gets me. I just hope it wasn't cleaned and dumped because someone was over their limit.

Anyways, hope everyone had a good wknd to those who got out. Some good reports coming in, looking forward to next wknd already!

I recently discussed this with. Few fellow guides. One of us requested clarification from the MNR, here is the response.

"Fish can be cleaned on the water but must be packaged so that they can be identifiable and counted.

Fish taken from waterbodies with size limits must be readily measurable at all times, unless:

Being prepared for immediate consumption,

Prepared at an overnight accommodation for storage,

Being transported on the water from a temporary overnight accommodation to your residence and you are not engaged in sport fishing,"

I've cleaned fish on the water before too, occasionally I'll gut a trout while it's still fresh, but it is kept whole and easily measured and counted.

The fish in question would not have satisfied any of the legal requirements.

U don't know if they did not satisfy the legal requirements! U said he kept the cheaks, there is skin on them! Or maybe they left a small piece of skin on the fillets. Mayb they are staying at a hotel there and didn't want to make a mess at there room. I'm sure with the fish being caught as of late they were not over the limit

PK. They didn't take any skin. I know this because I inspected the carcass. Also, every piece of meat must have skin for transport, not just a cheek.

Be a shame to see someone get caught over their limit or nailed for illegal transport.

I have seen this many times like last year at the launch on Quick Short Rd. 5 of them washed up on the shore. I don't know what the story was weather someone was trying to take some extra or possibly a shore lunch I don't know but looked pretty bad just floating there. I have also seen guys do this on the ice and some will leave the carcass on the ice or toss it in the hole when they are done. I would not throw the carcus back in the water but i would near a swamp for turtle food but to me it just don't seem right. If you had water front property i don't think it would be very nice to have them wash up on shore. Just my opinion....

That's wierd any time I've cleaned a fish and tossed it in the water off the dock it didn't float and in the shallow water seaguls and gobies made pretty quick work of the carcuss. If I cleaned them at night there was little left by morning.

I have waterfront just up from Shermans and this happens all the time. We used to clean all our fish and throw the carcass off the dock for the turtles and if the swim bladder isnt popped it will float. We stopped doing this quite some time ago and just fertilize the garden with the few that we keep. Very few guys know that you have to leave a piece of skin attached so that dosent surprise me, glad they kept the cheeks...yummmm. On a side note, I saw Cronzy keep the pectoral fins and the square piece of meat attached, so I gave it a try, man what we were missing...Give it a try sometime
