Wonder if using 45lbs lead core could have prevented the line from breaking?

Just read 45lb Lead core weight is the same as 18lb, the only difference is the sheath thickness.

Never tried using lead before but it seems like a good tool in Quinte. Heading out once more in the new year, I'm going to give lead a try.

Man, that was a rough and cold one !
Great job with the driving and boat control in those conditions Jim.
Got to know what ``no bananas mean``, had thought Jim didn`t
want any cause a student had stepped on one in the boat before.
While waiting for the pee hole to warm up I was the one that was keen
to get rod holders and rods ready. It ended up taking two of Jim`s rods out of commission,
but guaranteed that I could use my ole faithful.
Regarding about leadcore breaking in freezing conditions, the sheathing absorbs water and becomes brittle when frozen. One broke at the front eyelet of a rod while reeling in, if the leadcore freezes to the eyelet it is very easy to break just by reeling in, had it happen last year too.
It was a pleasure fishing with Jim and Jason.

Brent ...EEF :)

Stay with 27#, the larger dia 45# does not sink as much as #27 (water drag).
Use double or triple Willis knot and cortland brand
bill

Where can I find courtland lead core? I was at sail and bass pro last week but never noticed courtland. Was checking out the suffix/stren (cant remember) and bass pro shops brand. They ran anywhere between $13-$16 for 100yrds, 10 colour.

Great report Jim! That first picture is a testament to your determination to get into those fine looking fat fall walleyes. Pretty awesome that you hand lined in that brown after breaking off and doubling back!
