With snow in the forecast I'm considering putting runners on my portable hut. Can anyone attest to their value? I've heard the claim they will extend the life of your hut and I can easily believe that, but do they truly make a big difference when hauling your hut on foot over snow?

Dan carries them and Frabill calls them Hyfax runners. They are a white plastic strip you attach to the bottom of your hut tub. I've done some research and the material is called UHMH (Ultra High Molecular Weight) plastic.

Had my commando out 3 times and noticed a small hole already in the tub from draging across the parking lot on foot. I just put a set of Hyfax runners I got from Pro Tackle on yesterday so hopefully this will help. I've read a few post and people swear by them.

It's actualluy called U.H.M.W. I work with this material a lot at work. We use it to cover tops of inspection tables, guide rails, support holders for steel components from being damaged. I just ordered 5 sheets 4'x8'x1/2" at a cost of $1600.00.
Had some remants to add runners to my Pelican sled. Great stuff to work with. :D

a must if pulling with atv or sled , you can wear thru a tub pretty fast, especially in spring when gravel and such starts showing on the side of the road or trail...

skip the runners and grab yourself an old pair of skis and make a smitty sled. I made one and it pulls like nothing through any type of snow. http://forum2.quintefishing.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=12976

I like Dans idea for the Smitty type sleigh especially in the snow they pull so much better and less drag. I talked with a guy last year at Potters that made a set and he also took some blades off some old speed skates ground them down thin and split them and he had 4 pieces about 3 inches long 2 front and 2 at the back. He used a router and routed a shallow slit in the skies and epoxied the steel blades in and i tell you on ice this thing pulled like it was not even there and straight as an arrow which is nice when that wind is blowing it sideways lol.

I don't know what clam charges for runners but you can go to a snowmobile dealer and get a pair of sliders for a snowmobile, they are the exact same thing. They are about 15.00/ea. I had some new sliders that I never used for one of my snowmobiles and put those on the bottom of my clam.
