Just wondering if anyone Knows 8O when the Smelt run is in Lake Ontario.
I'm going on a Spring Lake Trout Fish with a friend to Elliot LK & "NEED" some Smelts for Bait  . Looking for info for GTA area in specific, But any info Will certainly give me a good indication of when the run is.

Thanks

I have not heard of a smelt run to note in the Bay of Quinte area for years. I sure hope there are still some, but alas I think that most have gone for salmon food more than anything. I used to thoroughly enjoy a meal of them in the spring growing up.

My father and his freinds used to bring home bushel baskets of smelts in the late sixties to early seventies, from west point in the county and I have gotten into it myself in the mid seventies, but the smelt run has been non existant for a lot of years now, sorry to say. I enjoyed many good feeds during those years. If there are any, they usually run in April, we always liked a warm spring rain, good luck if you try for some.

Hello. Yup, smelt runs are pretty much history. White Chapel near Picton used to be good. No idea if it still is. Before you use smelt for bait, better check the regs. Illegal to use dead or alive in some places. You can always buy some "really" dead ones in A+P grocery stores. "Good fishin", Al
