My GPS speed seems to jump all over the place when trolling. It's a real pain that I cannot seem to get fixed. I wrote to Humminbird and they said that it was normal for the GPS to not read correctly at speeds under 3 mph. I have had other GPS units in the past and never had that problem. Just wondering if there is a fix for the unit or if others have had the same experience. Tough to troll for walleye when you have no idea how fast you are going.

Thanks

how much does it jump around? I have the same unit, and it'll fluctuate from say 0.9-1.3MPH when I know I'm going appriox 1.1 - but it varies a bit with wind/waves, etc. That seems normal for all the units I've seen.

Mine jumps from .5 to 2.5. I have no idea what speed I am going. In fact when I am going full out in my boat it goes from 25 mph (which I think is right) all the way to 29 mph.

I have a 788c, and sometimes trolling at low speeds (1-2 mph) it'll bounce around if it's windy. The wind could be pushing you sideways, or backwards, or forwards. I like it, cause it lets me know if I need to slow down, or speed up to compensate for the wind. At high speeds, it stays pretty consistent. I wonder if the Internal GPS may have something to do with it?? I was told when I bought my unit that sometimes the Internal GPS units may have some interference problems. They said it wasn't that big of a deal, but recommended the External GPS (puck) unless I was going to use it for ice fishing also, where you would need the Internal GPS.

I thought I replied to this already, but I must not have...anyways....

What you are experiencing isn't that uncommon. GPS at low speeds is not very accurate at all and will jump around on you. The common remedy to this is to use a water speed sensor. Generally speaking, these are much more accurate at low speeds but very inaccurate at high speeds. This is where GPS will be the best. The water speed paddle wheels can be effected by things such as wave action and current so you can run into similar situations with that as well.
