Hi Guys,

Heard lots of people over the years talk about mercs and the oil needed in them. I have just purchased a 150 Optimax 2010 and am wondering just what I have to put in it as opposed to what I can run in it?
Any feed back is most helpful.

Paul

They recommend using quicksilver or mercury DFI/OPTIMAX oil, you know the really expensive stuff. I buy mine in the big jugs from west marine when they have it on sale.

Use Merc or Quicksilver DFI Oil!!!!! Premium Plus can be used in a pinch but it is recommended to use only Merc/Quicksilver DFI Oil.

There are cheaper ways to get it than through a dealer or a Canadian Retailer. Gander Mountain sells it for about $40 a gallon, or you can order from an American online company like Domo Online and get it shipped to a Kinek pickup or a buddy in the States (if you have one), that can get the price down to about $27 a gallon plus shipping. West Marine in Watertown sells the 2.5 gallon jugs for around $105-$110...

Any company will tell you only to use their products, and oil companies are really pushing theirs hard.
You should really check out synthetics, especially Amsoil, with their "preferred customer program" you get it for wholesale and even sent to your door within a couple days.
I switched over to Amsoil a couple years ago and now run it in every motorized thing I have with " noticeable differences" to how each had run before as well as saves me a "noticeable" amount of money.
Check out this site and what it does for your outboard.

Yes, yes, yes on Amsoil. Great product. I got the best tip of my boating life from a couple tournament fisherman about 5 years ago when I was walking around my local marina supplier with a jug of Merc DFI oil. They were both running Opti 225's on their bass machines and pulled me aside and told me about Amsoil HP. Fantastic product, warranty approved and about 1/2 the cost. Been running it in my Opti for 5 years and not a hint of trouble. You don't have to spend your money on the Merc DFI Oil. Who do you think makes it?...an oil company of course. You can buy it on the shelf at Canadian Tire now, but might be a touch less expensive buying from your local rep...

I have not used Amsoil and have not heard anything bad about it. Merc requires a DFI oil that meets TCW3 standard and Amsoil HP oil meets this. I also run a 150 Optimax and I use Evinrude XD50 at a cost of $33 per gallon as apposed to Optimax oil a cost of $78 for 3.73L. Having read the data on Amsoil HP it is comparable with Evinrude XD100 which is fully synthetic. This would be something to seriously consider if the price was right. As Grateful fisher indicated, it would be good to get info from someone that has been using Amsoil for a while.

Amsoil all the way. Use it in my sleds my guad and my boat. My boat motor is an older Johnson 2 Stroke and runs top notch on Amsoil.

I read Fred's post completely, lots there,lol.
My conclusion to Syn-Lube is it's the same ol' discredit the other guy and promote your own. I'm sure the other companies would have some ways of saying the same about Syn-Lube. Another eg; Coke vs Pepsi...Tide vs Oxy Clean..etc...etc.
Note, no disrespect to Fred whatsoever.

I use AMSOIL my self , why ? . a friend recommend AMSOIL and he recommend 100/1 so i did some research over the internet and i decide to become a dealer i had nothing to loose cause there is no minimum requirement and now used 100/1 premix only in my bassboat i have a 1988 merc 220 hp and never had any problem and i have been using it the whole season last year and in mid season i went to a merc dealer and he said you cant use 100/1 its to lean and i called AMSOIL and they told me the oil as been made for that so i still run it and still have no problem, and the reason why is that they have more lubricity agent in it and other stuff !
i know a person that as been using 100/1 in his chainsaw for 20 years and still run
i am an AMSOIL dealer and i do not say other oils are not good they are just different than AMSOIL and they may not use best and better stock to make the better oil
synthetic oil as no crude oil ,they are made in a lab , and petroleum oil can only be refine to a certain grade ,they can not take all the bad stuff out this is why synthetic is better and more expensive than regular oil.
i don't really care if somebody buy oil from other company it's there choice and i am not going to say they have bad oil ! ,i can only tell you what i am selling and for what purpose it is
AMSOIL test all of there products and if a test comes back with just a notch under they will say the oil is just about as good as the competition !
and for the price as a preferred customer is $ 34.70 for a 1 gal. jug to your door and this is tax and ship.in
you can check out this link for more info about synthetic
http://automotive-lube.wboil.com/ams-all/lrr.html and also go to testimonials

Ps. excuse my English righting ! i'm french , it doesn't mean i'm a bad person !!

here more test about outboard engine http://automotive-lube.wboil.com/storefront/hpm.html

Well after reading and searching a little on my own what do the merc boys think about what they have read?? Shepard do u think this is a good product as well? Are there any mechanics( marine) on the boat who could shed some more light on the subject?

Boils down to each their own, my motor is under warranty, with 400 hours on it, no issues at all I will stick with Merc/Quicksilver oil which is synthetic by the way as well...

But I do run Synthetic in the rest of my engines, lawn tractor, chainsaw's, auger, weed wacker, wife's car and Royal Purple in my Diesel truck.

To each his own is right, we all have our reasons for what we choose. I chose Amsoil after using the Evinrude synthetic because for one, Amsoil backs their product by replacing whatever your engine, etc. if found that the oil was the cause, also their delivery to your door and plus of course for the wholesale pricing you get with getting the preferred customer program.
As I mentioned in my earlier post I have seen, heard and felt the difference in this lubricant as well as the all important savings money wise without sacrificing on quality.
