Type of gear for BOQ Walleye?

Hey guys,

Looking for some pointers. Me and my dad just bought a new boat. A 16 ft Lund Rebel 1650. Ive fished for bass and pike with some success over the years. Mostly around adolphus reach, prinyers cove etc. But I'd like to fish for walleye but I don't know what type of gear I'll need.

The boat has a base model Lowrance FF, trolling motor and 60 hp merc. I understand that the walleye are found in deeper water in the BOQ. Do you think I'll need down riggers and counter reel rods?

Or will I be able to get on some just flat lining with spinning rods and maybe some planer boards? Whats the best way to get the lures down deep if I dont use down riggers?

Congrats on the new boat... You should read through the Tips and Tricks, lots of great info there about walleye fishing. Each season has its own type of gear as the fish prefer different presentations at that time. You can make it as expensive as you want...Most guys on here would never tell their wives what they spent on gear (ok maybe just me)...lol You won't need down riggers but good rods with counter are preferred in the fall if you want to target a certain depth repeatedly.

I would pick up a couple rods with line counters, and throw on 3, or 4 colours of lead-core. Definatly get some rod holders on the boat and couple in-line boards. My best stick last year was useing a reef runner 700 firetiger, off 3 colours of lead-core. That will put the bait down 25' give or take. Reef runner 800 can just be flatlined out the back achieving depths of 25-30' Hope that helps!

Thanks for your help. How exactly do the counter reels help? I understand they measure how much line you have out, but how else do they help with trolling?

When you buy deep diving baits they have a dive curve, for example, very important if you want to hit a certain depth

Tried to edit but hard to work, the Line out is the first number, that would be how much line you let out on your counter, the second number is the dive to meaning with 40 feet out the Rapala TD11 dives to 14 feet, I have them in a excel sheet and tape them to my planos.

And if your in a jam gear wise a 1.5 to 2.5 oz bottom bouncer will help you at 25 fow and just make a floro lead for any body baits. It's still fairly cool so also don't write off harnesses and crawlers.
