Bass fished out there today. 6 largemouth. Biggest would have been close too 5 pounds. Does anyone know what makes the whistling noises out there. What a background sound when your fishing. So peaceful and relaxing with all the birds singing as well.

Whistlers maybe? Actually not trying to be funny, referring to the Goldeneye duck. Their wings make a whistling noise while flying, hence their nickname.

Not sure that's it. Didn't see many ducks doing fly by. There was a lot of swans out. I think it has too do with the wind hitting something.Maybe the shore trees?

When swans fly their wings make a huge swooshing noise.

Maybe you are referring to the low hum and you can hear when the water is calm ? kind of like a jet high above but constant ?

Sheepshead make a "croaking" sound similar to when you take them out of the water. This time of year, there are millions of them spawning in the shallows, the low hum is a combination of millions of these things underwater making this croaking sound together. You can really notice it when the water is calm and quiet, big bay is notorious for this ominous low croaking or whistling sound due to the shear numbers of sheepshead in it. I was out off big island shoal the other day and it was calm, all you could hear was a constant low hum across the entire bay, it is weird, but maybe that is what you are referring to ? you will notice they are breaking the surface as well in large numbers together in a swarm in the shallows, i think its spawning stuff.

this might be too obvious for some...but a taught braided line on a spare rod sitting upright in the boat will whistle eerily on a windy day

A few too many wobbly pops the night before has made high pitched buzzing noises in my head before.

Gnats! Gnats, I say!
Or "may flies" as the farmers call them. (Not to be confused with 'mayflies' imitated by the flyfishers...)
On the south shore / Prince Edward Bay we get huge towering clouds of the things - enough to be seen like smoke rising above the trees. If it is otherwise quiet, there is a general hum kinda like a lower-pitched mosquito whine.
That's my guess.
(PS - 5 lbs - nice fish. I'll be out this weekend...)
All the best,
Dano

think I may have an answer to your question, Just returned from a week of walleye fishing from Big Island. The first thing one notices after the causeway to Big Island is all the construction equipment, at first I thought it was a Big developer preping for condo's-- It turned out to be a multi-million marsh preservation project. They have up to 10 draughts and several " mud sucker Machines" when these machines are running it has the sound of 1000 vacuum cleaners. The end result will be a much better Bass fishery in the Northport cove.
Hope this solves the mystery--- Meanwhile our walleye fishing was the slowest in several years--two boats with four "experienced Walleye fishers" only managed to boat 2 Walleye for the week---and these were caught deep in the weed beds of Muscote Bay----
Tight lines and cheer from thenewenglandboy--
