Trolling plate ??????

Have a 16.5 boat with a 90 merc 4 stroke and find it trolls to fast. Tried the drift sock and could not steer the boat. Thinking of purchasing a trolling plate and wondered if it affects the turning and handling at the high speeds and just how well they work at low speed. Also like to take the kids water skiing and knee boarding, will it cause any problems. Thanks 4 any info

tried trolling with drift socks also and ran into the same problem on my 16 ft'r, its trashy I know but I tried 2 5gallon pales tied to the front cleats and ran them to just behind the drivers seat back and it worked like a charm, slowed the boat down to about 1.8mph gps speed which is the perfect speed for me. its cheaper to try it then speeding a lot on a trolling plate.

I had a plate on a 75 Yamaha and Lund Explorer. Only way to go on problems.

I used to fish with a guy that had one one his 70 Yamaha. it worked great. For tubing ect the performance was better than before.

Well worth buying one, I Have on on my 100hp merc and it works great. I can troll as low as 1.2 mph

Was said earlier in the post, try the front cleats and one on each side. Should work great.

Buckets work, cut a 4" diameter hole in the bottom of the buckets and they work muck better, storage can be a pain. Just got a Happy Troller at a garage sail for $20 So I will try that next week and see if its any better.

I have a trolling plate on my 16 footer, and it works great. I only use it for trolling Quinte in the fall for walleye due to the bigger/rougher water in Adolphus Reach. I use my electric for trolling the rest of the year when fishing elsewhere.
My boat has a maximum hp rating of 70. Is the 90 not too big??

I own a Lowe 165 fish & ski which has a max rating of 90 Hp. I have to be going upstream or into a good wind to go slow. The drift sock was a horrible disaster, left no steering or any resemblance of control. Think the trolling plate sounds best, thanks guys 4 your ideas and suggestions.

I've used one on my last boat, Princecraft Pro169 and the boat I have now, a 22ft Sylvan w 3.0 i/o and I wouldn't use anything else on my boats. the happy troller was the best investment I've ever made

i have115 four stroke works great , the first one i had didnt split in the middle of plate with springs and hinges,buy the hinged one when in the wind throttle up will turn allot easier i troll on back lakes close to shore it was a problem not as bad with split plate
