Hey guys

I plan on trolling the big waters of the Bay this fall and I'm thinking of buying some counter rod reel combos.

What do you guys suggest for rod action? Medium? What about line?

Anyone ever bought the counter reels combos from crappy tire? They are cheap but im wondering if I should just buck up and buy something with more quality

Thanks guys

Shimano Tekota LC reels are awesome. Take a ton of abuse and keep on ticking. They are very easy to service yourself as well. Would recommend those but they are maybe a bit on the higher end for price. I've bought all mine used from various places for good prices and with a full rebuild they are better than brand new.

Hi There P C M

IMO, any 8'6" salmon /Steelhead rod with a pistol grip and a Daiwa 27 reel. The Daiwa's best price is Le Baron, it's cheaper there than Gander Mtn in US.

You can probably get a rod and reel for $125.00.

Just my .05 (no pennies anymore).

I second the diawa line, even the cheapest will work, nice thing about Diawa, you can buy a reel for $35.99 or $3599.00 and ya get what you pay for., but really can't beat their entry level stuff. The heartland rods are just fine for walleye trolling as well.

How much are you looking to spend on a combo? That would help us narrow it down for you.

Lmao @ David. No more pennies. Daiwa heartland makes. A planer board rod designed for walleye trolling. Good gods for the buck

I've used Diawas, Okumas and Tekota's and the Tekota wins hands down, IMO. Amazing reels.
As for rods, I typically use a 9ft, med action. For the price, the Shimano TDR rods are a good choice.

Line - I typically go with 10lb mono, as I find that braid tends to "pull" the hooks out sometimes due to the lack of stretch.

I agree with Stoty. Been using the Tekota's for years with no failures or let downs. A little more money but worth it. I have both the 500's and 300's and unless you plan on salmon fishing with them I would recommend the 300,s. They are a little lighter and hold ample line. As far as rods, I use the shimano talora planer board rods. U'll love the fall fishing so consider spending the bucks.
