Running planer boards in Haybay

I have a question. Last Saturday moring, I saw a big boat running three boards each side on the water of Haybay. There were quite a few boats out there. I am wondering if this is normal. If so, I will run my boards there sometime.

Not sure I understand what u mean by a big board running 3 boards each?

Do u mean big boards with 3 lines on each? Legally you can run 1 line per licensed angler in haybay. You can do that however you wish be it boards or flat line.

Chances are that you might have seen a charter boat and with lots of fishers, they run lots of lines, one per angler.

HI David:

There were quite a few people in that boat. I am talking about the legality here (I know each fisihing license can use only one line this side of the ferry). I thought that area might not be big enough to run those boards, especially with so many other fishing boats around.

Also, should other boats try to get out of its way? I am not quite sure about the rules in this case.

no laws about it as long as they had 6 licensed anglers onboard. I personally think it's too tight of an area for a 6 rod spread unless the boards were stacked close to each other which I doubt they were. More of a etiquette than a legality, but if everyone fished like that we'd catch nothing but planar boards :roll:

I try to not cross peoples spreads and appreciate the same courtesy, but hay bay is pretty small to be running a 300 yard wide swath, so how do you get out of the way of that?

Save the 6 rod spread for adolphus reach and beyond...and go parallel to the other boat traffic :!:

I agree 6 boards might be a bit tight when there is alot of boats. I'd try and stay clear but I'm not going to pull my lines / or drive to the other side of the bay to move for such a large spread. You could run 6 boards pretty tight for Walleye too which is fine. Some guys run 2 boards really wide.

Hey boys just playing devils advocate here, I'm not trying to start a debate. What is the difference between giving 1 boat with 6 anglers coming at you some room as opposed to three boats with two anglers each? Everyone should provide enough space and respect each other having said that, the bigger boats also should respect others space as well.

I fish Hay Bay frequently with Charter boats running wide spreads. The key is to follow the patterns and don't go against the grain. Use common sense and you should not run into problems.

If you want to run against or across the pattern you will have a frustrating day.

So are you saying that the charters should not fish in Hay Bay or that they have no respect for anyone?

I happen to disagree with both statements!

maybe don't run 6 in such a small area. If nobody is around it shouldn't matter, but what are you going to do if you're dragging 6 boards and heading towards someone drift jigging or anchored in your way :?:

Only time I see the charter boys in there is when they come into the mouth of the bay than turn and head back into the reach. They have been courteous and have made every effort to avoid others when I was there. If you’re anchored or your drift jigging and you are not under power you have the right of way anyway.

I don't get how it's "such a small area". Hat bay is big and even with several boats running boards ive never seen an issue. It would be different if the charter baits weren't showing etiquette and running you down but that's not the case. These guys are mostly top notch and last thing they want is a bad rep on the bay. Now down by ram island it's tight but like was mentioned if everyone runs the same troll it's not a problem either.

This time of year planer boards are great, and usually the traffic is low so it dosent bother anyone. But the jerk this spring that came right in on us while we were drifting SP and then yelling at us to get out of the way, thats just ignorant...

I'll be heading down sunday and if there is little traffic, I will be running the planers...
