In a recent post, asking for a few basics (need a few fall walleye tricks) I forgot to ask about the ideal trooling speed when trooling RR & DTD on the Quinte :?:

Thanks & keep your lines tight..............

Like Big Mac said, start slow and work your way up, the fish will tell you what they want.

Good luck!

Well it depends on the time of year, and of course what you are pulling I am a big beleiver in trolling faster looking for agressive fish. Even in cold water there is competition for food thus some fish have to be more agressive. I rarley go under 2mph. Just my 2 cents but I don't know that much.

Are the above quotes based on water speed, or gps speed over ground. Just wondering as I know they can be significantly different.

I prefer fast. 2.5 to start. Walleyes can hit burst speeds of 12 mph. 2.5 is not even a challenge for them. I have caught fish going 4.5 when avoiding a potential jam on the water . Most guys go too slow too often just because someone said so.

Yes, there are times to slow down but covering water is imperative to optimize your possibilities, so I start fast and then go faster before I will slow down. speed variance is often even more critical then which particular speed. The beauty of speed variance is that it covers both fast slow and stupid fast all at the same time. This way you can be assured not to be doing the wrong thing and cover all the options the fish want at the same time.

For a real world scenario that proves my point I offer this.

When fishing the PWT at Port Clinton one April. I was in a pack of about 60 boats. Now Lake Erie in the spring is known for it's .8 mph bite with Reef Runners. ( They were designed for this slow troll) So I decided to play devils advocate and trolled the perimeter of the pack at 2.5 to 3 mph. When the camera boat came around I watched them go through most of the pack ( evidently looking for someone with fish to show off for the camera). Turns out I was the only one with ANY fish and I had a limit of 5 already. It was 8 am.

Does this always work……NO….but don't rule it out just because of convention !

erie eyes, no one pulls a speed /temp probe in quinte. for the depth these lures are running, it is very close to gps speed. so speeds you see listed will be gps. I hope this helps

If slow is not working why not try fast. Nothing to lose.

I have been called out before on this board, for talking about trolling fast. i am a big beliver in 1.2-3.0.
Trolling a zig zag pattern, varys the speed's of the baits and causes strikes.
Dog lake, is that the light house on simcoe island ??

Nope not the lighthouse on Simcoe.

Time of year plays a big role in speed as well. Cooler water temps means slower is usually the way to go and higher speeds in warmer temps. But if you've tried slow and slower with no results you can keep at it and try to grind out a few bites, or speed up and see what happens.

When searching for the right speed while trolling multiple lines troll in a zig-zag pattern and see if you get hit on the lines on the inside of the turn or the outside. Speed up if hits are on the outside, slow down if on the inside.

I catch tons of them trolling 4.5-6, for musky, on the ottawa river, different water, but eyes are eyes,i've caught 'em in 40-45* WTemps in 4fow with musky sized spinner baits, along weed lines, and got em in 25fow over shoals and rockpiles, same with big smallies, i think, like said earlier , they become very aggressive once the water temps drop below 50*F.
