hi guys, i always fish for gar near the dam in Belleville in the spring time, i was just wondering do any of you get these guys through the ice? I am really wanting to get a couple through the ice, because they fight awesome in the spring, wonder what it would feel like on an ul? If any of you have any tips, what depths to fish, where to access etc. it would be much appreciated, please pm me if you would like to keep it a secret.

There was one caught about 400 yards off the shore here on Wednesday?? this week. First one I have heard of caught through the ice in a long time. There are photos on out facebook page of them spawning on the shoreline in the spring.

I got this.one at 12:30am on the Trent river... close to 8 pounds... caught it in a slow period when the walleye stopped biting ... could have been because the garden moved in I dunno... got it at about 4 feet below the ice. I thought I saw something come up from bottom after my minnow and hooked the gar at 4 fow

thanks for the info guys, thats a nice gar there! Thats pretty shallow, didn't think they would be that shallow, was it caught off a weedbed or rock pile? I want to hook into one under the ice but don't know where to look for these guys, by the way how was the fight?

Edge of a big weed line... just jigging and it hit. Great fight... kinda like a northern. I've seen them swim right under my feet right up against the bottom of the hole. They come up real shallow on clear days. Never really targeted them so I don't really know any tips... other then use bucktail or other type of rope/nylon type bait to get caught up in the teeth

Go out behind the water plant off Aikens Rd. I've never seen so many gar pike in my life. Looking down the hole you can see them just slowly cruising about 4' down. Every time I go I see them on the camera resting on the bottom too. I caught 4 last year. Go about half way straight out.
