Quinte Fishing

I never knew that taking your fish home "alive" in a livewell was illegal. I agree with the MNR on the logic of the rule, but it came as quite a surprise when I was told of a pal getting a $200+ fine for "transporting" his fish home.

Rather odd, because I have seen guys bring in fish to be weighed at the "Live Release" derbies. Some fish were brought there in a livewell in the back of their truck/car. Much easier than traveling 10 miles or so by boat and 9.8hp. I would guess all those guys were in violation of that rule.

I just thought this was worth mentioning, I'd hate to see any of you guys lose the coin over this rule.

This is how it read superdad.

So I fallowed up and called the MNR to get the rule correct. They said it was illegal to transport any fish that is "alive", other than minnows used for bait. I questioned the idea of traveling through the locks in the Trentsystem with fish in a livewell, because transportation is transportation, and they informed me I could be in violation doing just that.

So I thought everyone should be aware of this. I would never think of taking a fish from one area into another. But some do. Crappie are not native to our waters, but somehow they are here and eating the fry of the young walleye and others.

This would make an interesting case for the Spring walleye tourney. With my 14' at the back of Hay Bay, I made trips to the weigh station in Picton before with boat on trailer to the weigh-in because the ride would be to far. This opens up a whole new "can of worms" LOL couldn't resist

I didn't know exactly what the law was but thank you for pointing it out, too bad your friend learned the hard way, that sucks. I remember my brother had a kiddie pool in the back yard when we were kids up in sudbury, we caught some brook trout and brought them home in a bucket and kept them in the pool for a week. watching them eat bugs and what ever else landed on the water (we caught tadpoles and fed them those too) until my dad went in the back yard and saw them, he was kinda shocked to find a trout pond in his own back yard, made us bring them back to the creek and let them go.

My dad got a ticket for "improper technique" talk about whack laws.

Usually book trout are prity sensitive to change of habitat and need good clean well oxygenated water to survive, I tried the same thing once but with little catfish in our pond, once my mom saw them they were gone, kinda funny how she reacted.

I have always thought that rule was meant for someone who was interested in stocking fish somewhere. That I feel, is best left to the MNR biologists. I have never had any interest in doing that, so I haven't really paid that rule much attention. I catch my fish, and take one or two home, end of story. Not sure how much I like changing my habit of doing just that. -$200

yup, we had 2 of them, in one of those big "turtle" shaped pools, just after spring. they were hungry fish and did nothing but eat all the time, after the third day they would come over and look at you, guess they got used to us, then it was back in a pail right to where we got them. I'm suprised no birds got them. The only thing we did right was catch them during open season and not over the limit. however, we took them home live and we used a net to catch them (this was a SMALL creek). we were kids and didn't know better though.
