Quinte Fishing

Hello fellas, I live in muscote bay and most of my trip to the boat this spring I find a water snake or two or three. Resting on the cover, floor of the boat, Evan hiding in the compartments and coming out during our time on the water.
Any advice on how to keep them away? At Least out of the boat.

All kidding aside......... Are any water snakes in our area poisonous, or can you grab them and launch them off your boat?

Growing up as a kid swimming in the Murray canal there were plenty of the water snakes, we called them black snakes. I would not suggest trying to pick them up because even though not poisonous they are quick to bite as a defense and they do have some teeth. They can get quite big too. To keep them out of your boat I would suggest tying it up away from any area where they can slither down into it. I don't believe they can scale up the side if there is nothing to grip onto. I was told they are protected, not sure if that is true.

I'm personally afraid of any snake big or small and tried to stay clear of them my whole life. We use to put hydrogenated lyme around our campsite and the local out house. From what I understand they won't cross it as it burns there Belly. We use to pick up at thrashers farm center. I just checked on line Google so yes that and or granulated sulphur , not sure where to get that maybe thrashers as well ? It also says they don't like moth balls . Good luck and keep them on your side of the bay. K.m.b.f

I've had the exact same problem re: snakes in the boat. The only fix that worked for me was a boat lift.

Hutch is correct - they will bite.

When we had the farm in Tamworth, there was a large creek beside the barn. We'd see them sunning themselves - pretty harmless. To keep them out of the lower part of the barn we had a rubber sweep on all the doors. We kept everything open outside the barn, bins etc - (they are looking for a hiding spot)
so my advice would be to keep all compartments on your boat open and use what we used - a large BBQ tong to nudge them. Also we had a radio going day and night - I believe they avoided the barn because of the noise.
Not sure about Moth Balls, but I do know we used chlorine pool pucks (the big ones) on the creek side of the barn and at the door entrances.
They will take off - your bigger than them..........lol

No Snakes sign has been posted!

There are commercial products on the market to deal with snakes, cant speak for their effectiveness, but they are out there, I see way too many water snakes sunning themselves on the rocks while I'm Brook Trout fishing in my float tube , with my legs in the water , it spooks me for a few seconds till I realize they have no interest in me.

There is also a solar powered snake repellar, dont know how or if it works, could be just someone selling snake oil!

put them in a bait head and use them as cutbait.....

once the snakes know you mean business, they'll find another boat to play with, lol.

Any luck on keeping them away yet. They are going in your boat for the warmth. They will lay on what ever absorbs the warmth from the sun as they are cold blooded. If you can park your boat in a shaded area they will likely stay out of it.
