Just an FYI (and maybe you already knew) the fish n chip layer (called SonarCharts by Navionics) is available on any platinum card (platinum plus, hot maps platinum) and the plus and updates card. So the platinum plus card would have the same data on it as the fish n chip card.

Sorry for jumping in just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in in case you weren't aware.

I have one of each on my boat, and prefer them over the gold card.

Yes much more detail then the gold card. The gold card is really a navigational card, not a fishing card.

If you have to buy new and can't find used. Make sure to buy the updates card as it is $110 at Radioworld and you can activate it with your fish n chip card. Once activated you can download any areas you want and have the latest soncharts (fish n chip) data. You will get the exact same data you see on your mobile app and what you see on the web app at www.navionics.com. So for $110 it will be hard to find a cheaper used platinum plus. I know I'm giving unsoliciated advice and I hope it doesn't rub you the wrong way. It's as much for others reading this as you. Hope that is ok.

Can a gold card be upgraded as well ? or different platform ?

Yes you can use a gold card to activate an updates card. I didn't say previously that the updates card once activated is the same card as the Nav plus. It is just $90 cheaper as it requires an existing card to activate it.

Here is a complete list of what you can use to activate an updates card. Just in the last month or two you can actually use competitor cards to activate an updates card.

Here is the complete list from the Navionics website

There are some legacy Navionics Charts that are not compatible with Navionics Updates due to the type of chart or media the chart was distributed with:
- Navionics Classic Charts
- Navionics Land & Sea Charts
- Navionics Charts on NavChart format
- Navionics Charts on MicroChart format

As of March 2015, Navionics now allows certain competitors cards activate Navionics Updates cards.
Below is a list of accepted competitors cards:
- Garmin Bluechart
- Garmin Bluechart G2
- Garmin Vision
- TRAK marine & Lakes cards
- Lowrance Insight cards
- Lowrance Insight HD cards
- Lakemaster cards for Lowrance
- Fishing Hot Spots cards
- CMAP MAX on SD/mSD
- CMAP NT+ on SD/mSD
- CMAP NT on SD/mSD
- CMAP 4D MAX on SD/mSD

- CMAP 4D MAX+ on SD/mSD
- CMAP Essential on SD/mSD
**Your competitors card will not be harmed in any way, but will be recognized by Navionics going forward so that it cannot be used to activate another Navionics Updates card.

Navionics Updates is not compatible with Platinum products. If you have a Platinum+ or HotMaps Platinum card produced in June 2010 or later, Freshest Data can be purchased at 50% off the list price of the chart. If the chart was purchased before June 2010, a new chart purchase would be required.
