Hey guys, can you help me out with a little score I have to settle with my son.

Today on the bay, I was reminded of the acrobatics of bass when I caught one mid-bay. Of course, he was promptly released one week prior to season-open and all BUT...

With bass season just a week away, we've been talking a lot about how we're gonna gear up to land ourselves a few next weekend. In our conversation, we're in a debate...

Which are more known for their aptitude to jump, once hooked? Smallies or big mouths?

Help us settle the score, the chore of cooking a shore lunch depends on your answers!

Thanks,

Blue Pickerel

my personal experience is the smaller fish actualy jump more, i hammered the 5 plus pounders, on saturday, fishing the nystate opener. one was a smallie rest largies.
the small tryed to run straight down, (fishing 15 fow). where the largies jumped and splashed around.. personaly, if you are going for a shore lunch, i would keep largies, smallies may still be sitting on beds... normaly you can tell by a beaten up tail, from fanning the beds. i put those ones back, even if i am fishing a tournament, but thats just me... i love to fish, but you got to remember we are doing this for the fish, if you dont look after them, they wont be there to catch another day...

From my fishing experience I would have to say Smallies jump a whole lot more and much more acrobatic too

Its nothing to have a smallmouth clear the water and multipul times at that a largmouth often flops around on the surface but when it comes to high flyin acrobatics a smallmouth has that prize hands down

I think you comparing river smallies, to boq largies. river smallies are diffently world class, on the st.lawarance, i have had some jump pretty high. but i find when fishing the bay, your fishing deeper water. so they are pretty worn out or right besides the boat, were a largie could be a 50 -80 feet out, i have a long cast. generaly smallie fishing i am droping infront of the boat, using the flasher or fish finder to watch the my bait.

Thats a nice offer to take the guy and his son steel head fishing shark. that diffently a offer not to pass up..

looks like the guy that said largies, will be cooking lunch...
largies spawn earlyier then smallies, thats why i suggest keeping largies.

I agree with what has been said. Smallies in shallow water almost always give immediate multiple jumps. Largemouths seem more hesitant and tend to wallow on the surface before they jump ( if they jump at all). If caught in water deeper than 20 feet smallies are less likely to rocket.

would love to know who won.. i tryed to make a case for the largie guy, but as you quickly saw, smallies ruled....
i am largie guy, i would rather catch a 5 pound largie over a 6 pound smallie.. (did i really just say that) hmm...
but thats just me..

fireball, our "bass team" treats a 6lbs smallie equal to a 5lbs largie.

our boats best is a 5lbs 14 ounce largie. (dad of course). I would trade a 7lbs great lakes smallie for that fish anyday!

of course, a "northern" smallie is a little nicer. similar to a northern walleye compared to a quinte walleye.

with lake ontario and erie caughing up such massive smallies, the lustre quickly fades....but largies....not so.
