Ok I have 2 Okuma ma30DX reels I want to run 30lb braid backing then 600ft of 7 strand wire. How much backing can I use? Is there a online calculator? How can I be sure how much I'm putting on each reel? I know there is a counter but it only counts revolutions not actual footage. Advice would be appreciated.

Since you have 2 reels it is easy. Just spool it backwards on the first, so put the wire on first, then add the backing. Respool it on to the other reel paying attention to the numbers on your line counter so you know how to spool the second.

You will probably be best to tie a really small barel swivel between the braid and wire as the wire will cut the braid when tied together. Most wire setups im aware of are straight wire.

Hi rtkman,

If you have two reels, here is an option. Basically put your wire line on one reel first and then the braid backing over top until the reel is full. (backward from what it should be). Then take your second reel, and reel the line from the first reel on to the second so that it ends up on properly (backing and then wire). You should also reset your counter before you wind your backing onto the second reel and then when you come to the transition from backing to wire, record this number. Then take your now empty first reel and wind on this amount of backing and then your wire and you will have two fully spooled reels. Save this number for future respooling.

Like Scott said, You do not use backing on wire reel set ups. just spool on 1000 feet of wire.

I have been running wire divers for close to 15 years and have never been even close to being spooled. The most that I have seen taken is 800' on the line counter which basically is not an actual 800'. The knot between the braid and wire will be your down fall.

Hope this helps.
Al

Thanks for the info guys. I only have 600ft of wire so I have to have backing right? I was going to use an albright knot to join the wire and braid. I guess if you only would ever see 800 max out on the counter I would likely never see the backing anyways right? The line is bought so im going to have to deal with what I have. Here's another dumb question. How do I know when its full?

Most of us tournament fishermen detest the albright knot fishing salmon.

It was mainly used for tying copper to leaders and backing.
Theoretically you should retie the leader end after every 3 or 4 fish and the backing end retie at the end of every day.
Most of us have gone to the SPRO in-line swivels which has eliminated the problems created by the albright knot.

"Here's another dumb question. How do I know when its full?"

Do you mean when the spool is full ?

Later
Al

Ya how full is full on the spool? As long as its not rubbing? I've never used anything but spinning reels.

The Spro in-lines are used on copper, not wire.
As far as I know Spro is the only company making them that are available in this area.

Tightlines in Pickering had them in the past but I get them in new York.

those are 4: 1 gear ratio, they reel in 24 inches of line per revolution. (2 feet).
510-15, 420-20, 310-25 i beilve these are normaly mono numbers
those are the numbers of it, unless you have a different reel then i do.

if you ever need to know the line vs reel ratio, measure your spool times by gear ratio, in this case
your spool should go 6 inches around. times 4 (gear ratio)6x4 = 24.
if you dont have the gear ratio, mark spool, count how many times it goes around in one revolution of the handle.
hope this helps.

Well they took all 600ft of both the braid and the wire. Al what size swivel do you use? They have lots of sizes. Also what knots do you use to tie it in?
