after I got my PAL 5-6 yrs ago I went out and with limited money had to decide on a gun as well.. I ended up with a Winchester Speed pump.. for me it works fine, I know some ppl don't like winchesters (at least my friends don't lol), it came with two barrels, so I can use it as a slug gun or I can go for water fowl if I prefer. I have so far used it for skeet shooting, and also put on a scope and centred it in. and it works fine for me out to 100 yards.. I don't plan on ever shooting further for deer with it. The price was around 500 if I remember correctly, but remember this was 5-6 yrs ago. ( I still have yet to use it for deer hunting.. but recently bought a bow, so not sure when I will use it for deer)

I'd go with an o/u and riffled slugs. Easy to use, deadly accurate, fast to load and safe.
