Well, my brother and I and two friends finally made our first trip out to Wellington (second trolling attempt ever) and landed a nice 8lb brown. What a rush!!! I am definitely hooked on trolling now! Thanks to everyone on this site for sharing such great information and especially Al (Trannyman) for helping me out when it came to learning what it was I should consider when buying gear that might work at Wellington.

Thanks again!
Andrew

PS It hit an orange J11 running at 1.8 mph while in 15 feet of water. :)

me LOVE the browns!

definitely the right depths and right lure selection for that beauty!

was the fish caught flat lining, or behind a board?

Hey Steve,

The fish was came behind a board. Sorry I forgot to mention that when typing my post :P we had 50 feet running behind the board and had the board 50 feet from the boat. :)

that shows how aggressive browns are!

only 100' out...on a clear day, you could SEE your J11 working that water from the stern of your boat!

gotta love board fish!

I sometimes run 15' or so from the board with some baits....but then drop them 150' off the side of the boat.

great job!

Great info thanks Steve! Being so new to the game we were a little worried about running a long lead in shallower depths (chickens) haha but I'm hoping we keep getting lucky until we get a little more brave with our spread as we learn what we can accomplish and when (depending on depth, speed, lure, etc).

with the right baits, you can drop further back....

but unless i'm running a deep diver, where leads longer than 100' give me more depth, i don't generally run much further than 100' behind a board.

your best baits in tight, that don't go too deep (say less than 6' of water) are the ripplin redfins, smithwick floating rogues, bomber long A's (watch it, they'll get close to 6' back 100' behind the board), and yozuri floating minnows.

All baits mentioned have taken good browns on the "inside" board.

My "outside" board i'll run stuff that gets down 8' or so...but that's about it....

Go get 'em!

Nice fish, my phone must have been off that morning, I didn't see any missed calls though. Haha, congrats on the first brown, I am thinking of trying my luck for the first time wednesday.

Thanks guys, it is VERY addicting! :)

HAHA Roaster, sorry man, I was in a haze just waiting for Saturday to come and didn't even think of letting you boys know we were heading out. If you head out take your time out there...our boat was fully loaded which didn't help I'm sure but those rollers can really toss you around on the way to Athol Bay, at least that's what they did to us! :P

Thanks again everyone, it was a blast.
