Leadcore questions

I have 2 Rapala downrigger rods and Rsc30 reels laying around d not being used so I'd like to spool some leadcore for fall Walleye and spring Browns. Of course they may be used for Salmon as well. I'm not sure how many colours and how much backing to use though. I was thinking a 7 colour and a 5? I assume with leadcore you can't only deploy part of the section off a board?

You might have a tuff time fitting a 7 colour on a 30 size reel but a 5 colour with 250yards of 50lbs braid should fit no problem

Exactly what Dan said. 5 colours max. But you can always run more backing out to get deeper. The knot between the core and braid does not have to be at the board. Besides, eyes don't rip line out like trout and salmon.

So you think do both 5 colours? Canadian tire sells the same setup spooled with 7 colours but I don't know how much backing they have. I will use them for Salmon at times too so I don't want to run the risk of being spooled.

For fall walleye, do you really need leadcore?? The lures dive deep enough on mono or braid. Tail dancers, reef runners, deep Huskys etc... You probably wouldn't want to pull walleye out any deeper than 30 feet anyway. Could also use snap weights if you want to get shallow running lures down deep.

Just a thought.

Hey there
rtkman i use a 5 color with 100yard of mono backing on my rsc
with inline planer (offshore)
for steelhead but my little secret is i use a mini dipsy and a 8foot mono leader
it gets me close to 30 feet down
so if you use a deep runner with that you should be able to achieve alot more
IMHO about 40 to 45 feet
ps:but i agree with walleye9
do you really want to catch walleyes that deep especially if your planing on releasing them

I use a lot of different cores for walleye on Quinte. 2, 3, 5, 7 & 8 cores. Over the years there is only 1 walleye that we couldn't release. The time to get the 3 hooks out of the fish and out of the net was just too long. But you can ask any of the guys that have fished with me; cores and deep divers are not a problem off in-lines. Just don't horse them in. The time it takes to get the in-line to the boat, unhook it from the line and then reel the eye in, gives the fish sufficient time to equalize some what.

We don't use downriggers or dipseys because the fish rises too fast and no time to equalize.

Get the eye unhooked and back into the water as quick as possible. Usually no time for pictures. Many times we have watched them go to bottom in a 100 fow on the sonar.

I guess i'll do a couple 5 cores. I do see a lot of walleye released off long lines and don't see floaters too often.

Reeling in the fish slow, as Al stated earlier will definitely save the fish coming out of deep water, but there's also the cost of the line. Not sure of the price of leadcore, but I know a 300 yard spool of braid for a backer aint cheap. (x 2 or 3 reels) 12 or 14 pound mono would do the trick (for the eyes anyways), for probably 1/3 of the price.

Its expensive I know but I'll use these rods for Salmon / brown trout too. I'll stick to braid. I'll just use a light leader for Walleye and swap it out for Salmon.

rktman, all my cores do double duty (actually, triple, as they are used for walleye, browns, and salmon).

i use 30lbs braid backing and a 17lbs flouro lead for all species....

rtkman... was just looking at Rapala website and found some info on the rsc30 reels you may be intrested in.

Leadcore capacities.

10 colour plus 100 yard backing and 50 foot leader
7 colour plus 200 yard backing and 50 foot leader
5 colour plus 300 yard backing and 50 foot leader
3 colour plus 400 yard backing and 50 foot leader

Doesn't say what to use for backing though.

i use 9' Shimano Clarus rods for my core duties.

if i'm fishing early season, super shallow browns, i'll sometime's use shimano compre trolling rods....but that isn't very often.

i can get away with my 9' shimano clarus rods for all of my salmon duties, walleye duties, and most of my brown duties.
