FIRST OF ALL I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL WHO RESPONDED TO MY STATEMENT. I HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS ABOUT RIGGING FOR HARD WATER? ONCE AGAIN I'M COMING UP FEB.19-22 AND STAYING AT PERFECT VIEW WITH 7 FIREMEN FROM SYRACUSE. I'M NOT A FIREMAN, I WORK FOR A CARIOLOGY GROUP IN SYRACUSE. I'M GOING TO TELL YOU HOW I'M GOIN TO RIG AND WHAT TYPE OF ROD I'M GOING TO USE. THEN I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENTS OR SUGGESTIONS. BE KIND, ITS ONLY MY SECOND TIME COMING UP.

1. I MADE MY OWN ROD. ST CROIX BLANK MED-MED. HEAVY WITH A SEMI FAST TIP. 42 INCH LENGTH.

2. REEL IS A QUANTUM CATYLIST PTI.

3. PLAN ON PUTTING 10LB. TEST YELLOW HI VIS. LINE.

4. ATTACHED TO THAT A SMALL BALL BEARING SWIVEL.

5. ATTACHED TO THE SWIVEL 18-24 INCHES OF 10LB. TEST SEAGAR FLOUROCARBON. THEN ATTACH SPOON DIRECTLY TO LINE(I FIGURED THE SWIVEL WOULD TAKE CARE OF ANY TWISTS THE SPOON MIGHT MAKE.

6. I'M BRING AN ARRAY OF SPOONS AND JIGS FROM A-Z, AND 1/8 OUNCE TO 3/4 OUNCE.

7. I DO HAVE A MAP OF THE BOQ, SO I'M NOT GOING TO ASK YOU WHERE TO FISH. THAT WOULD TAKE THE FUN AND SELF GRATIFICATION OUT OF THE HUNT. PLUS WE ARE ALL LOOKING FOR THE SAME THING.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU ALL IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP YOU MAY HAVE TO OFFER. ALSO I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR WELCOMING ME TO THE BOARD. I'M ALREADY STARTING TO LOOK AT PLAINER BOARDS AND RODS WITH COUNTER REELS. YOU ALL SOUND LIKE A GREAT GROUP OF FISHERMEN, THAT HAVE A GOOD TIME AND ENJOY THE SPORT.

Looks pretty good so far....having been there and done that, the only thing I would do different is to use a superbraid (Fireline) as my main line. Other than that, leave the lighter lures at home. 3/8 - 3/4 will get it done 90% of the time. Throw in a couple ouncers in case the the current is heavy so you can see your lure on the flasher (if you don't have a flasher, stop reading this and order one (Vexilar) from Cabelas this very second!!!) Anyhow, hope this helped. A pile of us are coming from Pennsylvania for our annual the last week of Feb. Take care and rip some lip. ROY.

I FORGOT ABOUT CURRENT. AND YES I DO HAVE A FLASHER. JUST BOUGHT A NEW FL-18 VEXILAR. BEST INVESTMENT I EVER MADE. I THINK WILL GO WITH THE BRAIDED LINE. ROY THANKS AGAIN, HOPE TO SEE YA ON THE ICE.

Guys, Here is a tip .....

I also use a Vexilar FL-18. When the current pulls
your lure out of the veiw of the Vexilar drill a hole
3 or 4 feet down current of the hole you are fishing
through. Then place the Vexilar transducer in the
downstream hole. Your lure is back on the screen
and you can continue fishing with the smaller spoon.
The walleye may only want small lures on that day.

If you are not fishing in a shanty, I would suggest NOT using a braided line. They tend to absorb water , freeze and become hard to manage

Most people ice fish for walleye by using assorted jigging spoons (or still lines) and concentrating on the bottom 3-4 feet of water, since that is where most active walleyes spend their time searching for food. As a result, it is my opinion that as long as you have good minnows to tip your spoons with, and you focus on bottom fishing, I do not think it is necessary to spend the high price on a Vexilar to fish for walleye on the BOQ. I always do as well (or better) than a lot of my friends who own one.

However, when fishing other lakes, the Vexilars are outstanding for locating suspended fish (perch, lakers, crappy, etc) over deeper water, and it is in these conditions that I sometimes miss having one.

I've used Fireline my last few trips up to the BOQ and haven't had any problems with it. It does freeze a bit but the lures are heavy enough to pull the line off the spool.

Richie - One other thing for your list is a few no. 9 jigging Rapalas. I've had real good lick with them my last few trips. By the way, I fish Oneida Lake too.
