flat line a bait that dives no deeper than 15'.

put it way behind your board (like 250' or more) ... distance between the board and your boat isn't as important.

try a rebel fasttrac or j13.

hope this helps someone out there. :)

I wont be back up for a couple more weeks, but based on what I'm reading (and hearing), i'd give it a shot.

I was out on Lake huron last week and i flatlined everything, and i was no deeper than 10'. Running A.C. shiners Picked up 5 bows and a brown in 4 hours. i would imagine with the shad being in I dont see why you wouldnt even pick up a bow in the bay . I think people must just be fishing below them thats why u dont pick to many up! Great post Steve

I have received word from a commercial netter that I'm friends with that their hoop nets that have been placed in the top 20' of the water colums (over much deeper water) are taking both walleye as well as gizzard shad.

The thought it the gizzards are up high, and the walleye are chasing them up to the surface to feed.

There are so many dormant walleye on the reach that you have to focus on the few active ones....

A bright, jointed bait ran up high just might be the ticket.

I'd be running chartreuse or orange.

with super long leads speed plays a factor as the lures at slower speeds don't work well at very long leads. tend to float dead so to speak. keep your line stretched. I run very long leads all the time and increase my speed just a bit to keep the lines tight. works for me.

Question Steve, why wouldn't distance from boat to board be as important as distance back from board. I would have thought the further out to the side is further from any boat noise, and obviously further back is yet further from noise. I used to go out 50 to 75 feet to the board from the boat, have been trying at least double that recently. It does make changing up lures more work, and if its not any advantage, then there is no point, so I am interested in your thoughts.

I know one guy that goes about 150 to the board and another 225 or so back, gotta be awlful quiet way out there if you can still see the board, and its a lot of work to haul a big walleye in from 350 to 400 feet out, but if its effective, its worth it. This guy does pretty well, but then so do others that don't go so far out.

Don't think distance would matter as much because you are hunting active fish with this method and noise will not be a factor in whether the active ones bite or not.

correct.

you are targetting active fish.

hal, i'm not saying putting the board out 200' wont work, but I'm not sure its necessary using this method.

I'd say throw 'er out 75' or so, but make sure you get that bait back there...225' or so, that way if your boat spooks them slightly, they'll be back up again feeding by the time your bait swings by.

I know of one feller who is dropping them back 300' ....

and no, i didn't mention Gman's technique. he has a pattern somewhat similar, but with different lures and a different method for getting them down to the zone.

his success last winter using his method was fantastic!

oh, walleye5, you are very correct if using mono.

this technique would only work using a non stretch form of line.

we use 30lbs braid.

also, jointed baits would work better with this method, as it would transmit the action at a lower speed, or with longer leads out.

have fun guys!

wish I could be there this weekend!

Many of us have caught them too when letting a line out.
Got to like it when that happens, feel the hit and set the hook too. :o
The lure's close to boat and up high .
Must be active fish. :)

Huh......I talked to someone else who told me they bagged 19 eyes fishing taildancers 450-500 back. They were close to the main lake though......guess like always... it depends on the area you are fishing. thanks for the tip in any event Steve.....god knows I could use it.
