I start at the 100' mark and then do every 50'. At 200' 2 short pieces of shrink wrap, 1 piece at 250', 3 short pieces at 300' and so on. This method is deadly acurate for depth. Line counters not so much. Like I said you can be out 80' at 400 on the counter.
The biggest mistake anglers make is that they do not back the star drags off on their reels when not in use. The drag on my old Tekota 800 is still perfect.
I could but I don't do the drags myself. I am sending my old diawa 47LCs away to be rebuilt this winter. One of them is 22 years old and the drag is definitely worn out. I use them strickly for wire now and they take a beating.
